Previously, in May 2025, just four months after he left office as the oldest serving president, Hunter Biden announced a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
After receiving the diagnosis, he began treatment, which included hormone therapy and radiation therapy. Last month, while announcing his upcoming autobiography, 83-year-old Biden described the treatment process as 'going really well.'
However, in an extensive interview published late Friday for BBC Newsnight, Hunter Biden stated that his father's illness is progressing despite the treatment. Biden noted: 'The cancer has spread; it has metastasized into his bones and further.'
He added that his father's condition is very painful and weakens him in many ways, but 'he is still here. He is still doing his thing... he still believes in this country.'
During the conversation, Hunter Biden appeared emotional at times while discussing his father's health. He concluded: 'It is truly, truly hard, and very sad to watch.'
Despite constant questions about his health as the oldest US president, then 81-year-old Biden decided to run for a second term in 2024. However, after an unsuccessful debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024 and a wave of pressure from Democrats, Biden withdrew from the presidential race. Ultimately, Trump defeated the candidate Biden replaced—then Vice President Kamala Harris.

Despite the illness, Hunter highlighted the former president's resilience, mentioning that 'I wish my father could complain more.' He reinforced Joe Biden's paternal value, affirming: 'My father is the center of the family. He is the best father, best husband, best grandfather.'
During the same conversation, he addressed the presidential debate held in July 2024, where Joe Biden, then US president and Democratic candidate, confronted Donald Trump, Republican candidate. Hunter related being shocked by the debate, as he suspected something was wrong, attributing his father's poor performance to physical exhaustion caused by long travels.
Subsequently, Biden received a prostate cancer diagnosis, leading Hunter to question whether the disease was already present and if it could be affecting his father at that time.
