The Stormers XXIII team must avoid errors in the upcoming match against Pumas in the Currie Cup playoffs if they hope to change their standing in the tournament and build momentum for a late push towards the semi-finals.
Currently, the Cape Town-based team holds fifth place in the table, which keeps them in contention for the playoffs. However, a loss to the team from Nelspruit on Saturday at 17:00 could effectively end their ambitions of reaching the playoff stages.
Head coach Tom Dawson-Squibb remains optimistic about his team's chances, believing that a strong start away from home will give the players the necessary confidence before the final two matches against Bulls and Lions.
Dawson-Squibb emphasized that despite awareness of their current position in the Currie Cup table, his message to the players was to focus on the match against Pumas. He noted that while it is an old sports cliché, focusing on playing well against Pumas will give the team its best chance of succeeding against Bulls, and subsequently against Lions.
Despite an inconsistent campaign, Dawson-Squibb is convinced that all setbacks have taught valuable lessons that could prove decisive in the concluding part of the competition. The coach insists that although an ideal table position is currently unattainable, the overall picture remains positive, and his team continues to progress.
He added that the main goal is very simple—to win the Currie Cup, and they still believe in it. Therefore, Saturday's match against Pumas is of particular importance, as Stormers XXIII cannot afford another setback if they want to maintain hopes for the semi-finals and gain momentum at the right time in the tournament.
