Akshay Sharma started his training at 4 am while the residents of Bengaluru were still asleep. Three years ago, he worked in the information technology sector with a sedentary lifestyle, but today he has transformed into an Ironman athlete thanks to discipline.
His view of life changed during a Christmas trip to Chikmagalur in December 2022. Meeting mountain tourists made him think about stepping out of his comfort zone and living outside the office routine.
He notes: «It was humbling, and I realized that the body and mind are capable of much more than I had ever demanded of them. This realization was uncomfortable, but necessary.»
Starting in January 2023, his daily routine included taking stairs, hill repetitions, long runs, cycling, meditation, stretching, and recovery. He explains that preparing for mountains involved more than just strength.
After several months of training, Akshay completed a 12-day trek to Everest Base Camp. Later, he conquered Lhotse Peak, where, as he recalls, «progress comes slowly, step by step.»
A colleague casually mentioned completing an Ironman. His friend Sagar recalls: «When he first told me about the Goa Ironman, I laughed.» However, Akshay has already set his next goal.
The training in Goa required swimming through waves and currents. He recalls: «I stopped, swam for five minutes, and focused on visual landmarks, such as coconut trees and huts, to get back.»
Each week, he performed three swims, three bike rides, three runs, and three strength training sessions. He emphasizes: «Triathlon is not just swimming, cycling, or running. Nutrition is the fourth discipline.»
On November 1, 2025, Akshay participated in the Ironman Malaysia. After swimming 3.8 km, cycling 180 km, and running a marathon, he finished in 15 hours and 40 minutes, within the official cut-off time.
When he heard the phrase 'You are an Ironman,' it proved that discipline and consistency can transform an ordinary beginning into an outstanding result. Now, his dream is Mount Everest. He advises: «Don't wait until you feel ready. The first step doesn't have to be perfect; it just has to happen. Consistency changes the game.»
