Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that cooperation among the central banks of BRICS countries is crucial for creating a resilient, efficient, and comprehensive global financial system.
During the meeting of finance ministers and central bank heads of BRICS in Jaipur on August 12-13, Sanjay Malhotra emphasized the key role played by central banks in maintaining price and financial stability. This was reported on social media on Thursday.
The Governor also highly praised the efforts made by central bank working groups in areas such as information security, fintech, cross-border payments, sustainable finance, capacity building, and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement.
The Finance Minister and the RBI Governor jointly chaired this meeting. According to the social media report, the Governor stressed that cooperation among central banks is critical for building a financial system that is resilient, efficient, and inclusive, and thanked the central bank working groups for their work in these areas.
Earlier this week, Malhotra stated that BRICS countries are exploring ways to reduce costs and increase the speed of cross-border payments, including utilizing linkages between multiple payment systems and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
He noted that cross-border payments are of interest to BRICS countries because there is potential to reduce costs, especially in retail operations, and increase transaction speed. Although work is underway on various methods of cross-border payments, including CBDCs and the integration of multiple payment systems, they are still at the discussion stage.
Regarding trade in local currencies, Malhotra reported that India is already conducting trade in local currencies with several countries, although the volumes remain small. Furthermore, the RBI signed a memorandum of understanding with the central banks of the UAE, Mauritius, Maldives, and Indonesia to raise awareness among importers and exporters about the use of local currencies, and stated that more such agreements are planned.
