Mustard oil is widely used in Indian cuisine, but its applications extend far beyond food. It is used for home treatments, preparing marinades, hair care, skin care, infant massage, and moisturizing the skin in cold weather.
However, many oils available on the market contain impurities such as palm oil, mineral oil, or chemicals that can harm health instead of benefiting it. In such situations, you can extract 100% pure, natural, and chemical-free mustard oil from seeds available at home.
Although extracting a large quantity of oil without special equipment is difficult, for tasks such as skin care or baby massage, you can prepare a moderate amount of oil using only a blender and cotton cloth.
Required Ingredients
The following are needed for preparation:
- Black or yellow mustard seeds (mustard seeds): 2 cups (good quality, cleaned)
- Warm water: 2-3 tablespoons
- Sesame seed oil or olive oil: 1-2 tablespoons (optional, to aid initial blending)
Preparation Method
First, the mustard seeds must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, dirt, or pebbles. Then, they should be dried in the sun for 1-2 hours or lightly dried over low heat in a pot for one minute to remove moisture.
After the seeds have cooled, place them in a dry blender jar. Instead of continuous running, use the pulse mode (short bursts) to obtain a coarse mustard powder.
Next, add 2-3 tablespoons of warm water to this powder. (Adding water initiates the release of natural oil and pungency from the mustard seeds). Run the blender again for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns into a thick, smooth paste.
Transfer the finished paste onto a plate or into a bowl. Now, thoroughly rub and squeeze this paste with your hands for 3-4 minutes. You will notice the oil's greasiness starting to appear on your hands.
Take a clean cotton or muslin cloth. Place the mustard paste in the center of the cloth and wrap it tightly, pressing hard. Drop by drop, pure yellow mustard oil will begin to collect in the bowl.
This pure oil, free of chemicals and additives, is ready. Store it in a clean, dry glass bottle.
