When cleaning the house, attention is often paid to the floor, tables, and other furniture, while some items remain neglected. One such item is the sofa. Since people use the sofa daily, it gradually accumulates dust, hair, food crumbs, and sweat. Cleaning a sofa requires time and often needs a vacuum cleaner and other tools.
If there is no vacuum cleaner at home, the thought arises of needing to contact professionals and spend money on cleaning. However, this is not the case. Basic sofa cleaning can be done using only some caution and items already at home, without involving a vacuum cleaner or additional expenses.
Before applying any household remedies, you must study the sofa material and care instructions. Cleaning methods can vary depending on the fabric type, such as cotton, leather, or velvet. Using an unsuitable cleaning agent or too much water can damage the color and the fabric of the sofa.
There are several steps for self-cleaning:
Dust removal with dry microfiber: If you do not have a vacuum cleaner, first take a clean, completely dry microfiber cloth and thoroughly wipe the seats, backrests, armrests, and corners of the sofa. If the cushions can be removed, they should be cleaned separately. This will help remove most of the surface dust and fine particles.
Cleaning corners with a soft brush: The most dust accumulates in the seams and corners of the sofa. For this purpose, you can use a brush with soft bristles. Gently brush the area, and then remove the collected dirt with a dry cloth. It is important to avoid vigorous rubbing so as not to damage the fabric fibers.
Stain treatment with a weak soapy solution: If there are stains on the upholstery, it is better to prepare a liquid solution with a small amount of soap rather than pouring in a lot of water. Before cleaning a stain, test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the sofa to ensure it does not affect the color or the fabric. Instead of wetting the sofa, dampen a cloth slightly with water and carefully treat the soiled area.
Improving freshness with baking soda: If there is a slight unpleasant odor coming from the sofa, you can lightly sprinkle dry baking soda on a cloth and leave it for some time. After that, the soda must be thoroughly removed using a brush or a dry cloth.
Nevertheless, before applying any home method, always perform a test on a small, inconspicuous area of the entire sofa.
The most important thing when cleaning a sofa is not to over-wet it. After finishing the work, open the windows and turn on the fan so that the sofa can dry quickly. You should refrain from sitting on the sofa until it is completely dry, as prolonged moisture retention can lead to mold or an unpleasant odor.
Thus, regular sofa cleaning does not always require spending money on a professional service or buying a vacuum cleaner. It is enough to regularly dust, clean stains immediately, and choose a cleaning method appropriate for the upholstery type. This will allow the sofa to remain clean and fresh for a long time.
