A failed harvest can destroy months of a small farmer's labor. As summers get hotter, rainfall becomes unpredictable, and water increasingly scarce, even a carefully planned growing season can collapse in a matter of days.
The human cost of this uncertainty became clear to Satya Raghu Mokkapati when he was only 17 years old. In his village, he once saw a farmer eating dirt. When Satya asked him the reason, the farmer replied: 'My crops died. My stomach doesn't know that my pockets are empty.'
These words stayed with him. Years later, they helped shape an idea designed to provide small farmers with greater protection against high risks that can ruin a harvest.
In 2015, Satya, along with Kaushik K, Saumya, and Ayush Sharma, founded the agricultural startup 'Kheyti', which developed the 'Box Greenhouse'—a compact greenhouse specifically designed for small farmers.
Protecting Crops from Harsh Weather Conditions
Unlike crops grown in open fields, plants inside the 'Box Greenhouse' are protected from adverse weather conditions. This structure creates a controlled environment for growth, where the harvest is less susceptible to excessive heat, rain, and pest attacks.
Explaining this concept, Satya notes: 'We build homes to live safely and protect ourselves from environmental factors like heat, rain, insects, etc. Similarly, the greenhouse helps plants thrive.'
The idea is to create a more stable environment around crops, even when external conditions become challenging.
Maximizing Every Drop of Water
The greenhouse forms a microclimate that promotes crop growth under more favorable conditions. According to the entrepreneur, 'our greenhouse reduces excess heat by 2–4 degrees Celsius, decreases pests by 90 percent, and saves 98 percent of water compared to traditional open-field irrigation.'
These metrics solve three problems that farmers face simultaneously more often. Lower temperatures can reduce heat stress, pest protection can limit crop damage, and a sharp reduction in water consumption makes cultivation more viable in areas experiencing water scarcity or irregular rainfall.
Helping Farmers Make More Informed Cultivation Decisions
'Kheyti' supports farmers not only by installing the greenhouse. They receive consultation on what crops to grow, when to sow them, and how to cultivate them inside the structure, helping them use the greenhouse more effectively and increase productivity.
The greenhouse is available in two sizes. One covers 320 square meters and costs about 2 lakh rupees, while the larger model covers 462 square meters and costs approximately 3.35 lakh rupees.
Design Tailored to Small Farmers' Needs
Traditional greenhouses are often unaffordable for small farmers due to high costs. 'Kheyti' developed the 'Box Greenhouse' as a more accessible option for those who cultivate small plots of land.
Speaking in his TED Talk, Satya explains that while climate change is a problem much larger than any single farm, farmers can still create more favorable growing conditions on a small part of their land. This thought is at the core of the 'Box Greenhouse': giving the farmer greater control over the conditions that directly affect the next harvest.
Preparing Farms for Harsher Climates
For small farmers, climate resilience comes down to very practical questions: will there be enough water? Will extreme heat damage the crop? Will pests destroy the harvest before it can be sold?
'Kheyti's 'Box Greenhouse' aims to mitigate each of these risks on a compact agricultural plot, helping farmers plan what and how they will grow. The conversation Satya had at age 17 started with a farmer whose poor harvest left him hungry. Years later, this inspired a solution built on a simple hope: that one bad weather period should not have the power to cancel out an entire season's work.
