The Hyundai Motor Group is implementing an innovative solution to combat the shortage of parking spaces in condominium garages by using robots capable of automatically moving vehicles.

A consortium composed of Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Wia, and Hyundai E&C has initiated a pilot project for this technology in South Korea. This initial test aims to increase the parking capacity of a local condominium by up to 50%.

This is the first test of this nature conducted in a South Korean residential building. The project received approval and public funding from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport through the smart city regulatory sandbox, a mechanism that allows for the experimentation of technologies not yet covered by current legislation.

Initially, two sets of robots will be responsible for managing 53 spaces in an isolated section of the building's first basement level.

The robots operate in pairs. They use LiDAR sensors to measure the size and location of each wheel, allowing the two units, which are thin and wide, to position themselves under the automobile. Together, they lift the wheels and transport vehicles weighing up to 3,400 kg, moving at a maximum speed of 4.3 km/h.

For the driver, the procedure is simple: they must stop in a designated drop-off area and proceed. Upon return, the retrieval request is made at a condominium kiosk, and the robots return the car to the pickup point.

Although speed is not the main benefit, the gain lies in space utilization. Since there is no need for doors to open or traffic between cars, vehicles can be placed much closer to each other. Additionally, the robots can navigate in all directions, enabling the use of narrow spaces that would be difficult for a human driver to utilize.

According to the group, this system also contributes to reducing accidents in garages because it separates the flow of cars from pedestrian traffic, in addition to decreasing emissions, as vehicles do not idle while looking for a parking spot.

During the pilot phase, the consortium will monitor various indicators, such as the time required to park and retrieve each vehicle, user expectation, and the success rate of maneuvers. There is also an intention to determine the ideal ratio between the number of spaces and the number of robots for different types of buildings.

A spokesperson for the Hyundai Motor Group stated that the objective is to evaluate the operational stability, efficiency, and practicality for the user of the parking robot in a real residential scenario, aiming to create a standard model applicable to a diversity of spaces.
