Following the introduction of BS-6 norms in 2020, many companies abandoned diesel fuel, which led to a decrease in the number of diesel cars in the Indian market. However, this situation has created opportunities for some manufacturers, including Skoda.
Skoda Auto is working on bringing back diesel engines. The company may potentially introduce a diesel version of the Superb in the first half of 2027, marking the return of diesel power units to the brand's portfolio.
Previously, the company imported only 100 units of the third-generation Superb into India. In 2025, at the India Mobility Show, Skoda presented the Superb (which was launched in the global market in 2023), indicating that this car could appear in the Indian market. Furthermore, Skoda plans to fully import this model under the CBU regime.
The 2.0-liter TDI engine from the Volkswagen Group could be installed in this vehicle. Currently, Skoda's portfolio only features gasoline-powered vehicles. The launch of a diesel car could give Skoda a competitive advantage, as there is currently no diesel premium sedan available in India.
The Superb plays a significant role in positioning Skoda as a premium brand, and its return will offer Skoda fans a new option for a premium sedan, especially considering the company's portfolio is saturated with SUVs. If the car is released at an appropriate price, it can compete with the Toyota Camry.
The timing for importing this model is also favorable, as the company will benefit from the free trade agreement between Europe and India, which will lead to reduced tariffs on vehicles. There is speculation that Skoda might launch this car in the price range of 50 to 60 lakh rupees.
