The Gajraj Suraksha technology relies on Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) that record vibrations propagating through the fiber optic cables. Since every animal produces a unique movement signature, Gajraj is trained to recognize the pattern of elephant movement and distinguish it from other terrestrial movements.
Upon detection, the system immediately sends alerts to train drivers, station masters, and railway control centers, allowing trains to slow down or stop before reaching the crossing. This project, announced by the Railways last year and currently being implemented on nearly 700 kilometers of forest routes, is valued at 181 crore rupees. According to Indian Railways, the system can detect elephants with 99.5% accuracy, identifying movement within five meters of the fiber optic cable. Thus, the technology aims to give drivers time instead of demanding a reaction in impossible situations.
India's railway network crosses several long-established elephant corridors, many of which pass through forests in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu. Some sections have become particularly vulnerable. The Northeast continues to show a significant proportion of such incidents. Following repeated accidents, the All India Railwaymen's Union (AILRSA) publicly pointed out the technical limitations faced by drivers in 2024. The union noted that even after applying emergency brakes, a fully loaded train usually requires at least 1.6 kilometers to come to a complete stop. They argued that whistling and braking cannot reliably prevent collisions when elephants suddenly appear on the tracks. Instead, the union called for systemic preventive measures, including AI-based detection systems, underground wildlife crossings, and improved coordination between railway and forest services, rather than placing all responsibility on drivers.
The Gajraj system aligns with this approach, shifting intervention further up the chain before a collision becomes inevitable.
However, artificial intelligence is only part of the solution. Tamil Nadu has already demonstrated what happens when technology is combined with coordinated human response. In the Madukkar forest area near Coimbatore, the Forest Department installed AI-based thermal camera systems along the railway lines in the village of Putupathi. Over the last two and a half years, this network has generated over 7116 real-time alerts, leading to 3281 instances where drivers slowed down or stopped trains to allow elephants to cross safely. Officials state that the system has ensured approximately 9481 safe elephant crossings with zero elephant fatalities on this section of the railway.
Indian Railways has also proposed additional measures, including solar LED lights in forested areas, warning signs where elephant corridors run, regular vegetation clearing near the tracks, placement of elephant trackers by forest departments, and bee buzzers that gently deter elephants from railway lines. None of these measures alone can eliminate the risk. But together with AI systems like Gajraj, they point to a different infrastructure philosophy—one that recognizes wildlife movement as a reality that must be anticipated before disaster strikes.
