The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has begun monitoring claims made about food products promoted by celebrities and social media influencers. Such assertions, for example, regarding 'immune boosting' or 'nutrient richness,' are now under close scrutiny by the regulator.
As part of a serious step to curb misleading advertising campaigns, FSSAI has cautioned influencers and celebrities that endorsing unsubstantiated claims about food products could lead to legal action. This occurs concurrently with increased measures against manufacturers selling unsafe food.
The regulator clarified that deceptive advertising and food product endorsements may result in action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards Advertising and Labeling Regulations, 2018.
