According to the latest assessments from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the monsoon may weaken in various regions of the country during September. This forecast covers states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, indicating a probability of below-normal rainfall.
If this occurs, it could impact agriculture, reservoir levels, and water availability. It is important to note that this conclusion is based solely on the forecast of one meteorological model and may change depending on weather condition shifts.
September is the concluding month of the Southwest Monsoon, during which many states receive their final rains for their summer crops. A reduction in precipitation during this period is causing concern among farmers. Meteorologists are continuously monitoring the state of the monsoon using new data and various models.
Some meteorological agencies have recently also suggested the possibility of reduced rainfall in the latter half of the monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a forecast predicting less than normal rainfall in several parts of the country in August and September, drawing attention to the weather in September.
ECMWF, or the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, is considered one of the most reliable global meteorological models. This model generates forecasts by analyzing millions of data points obtained from satellites, weather stations, as well as from the ocean and atmosphere. In its recent forecast, many areas of Western, Central, and North India are categorized in the lowest percentile of precipitation, meaning a high probability of significantly less rainfall than average.
According to the model, a decrease in below-normal rainfall may be observed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh in September. Such a decrease could negatively affect summer crop plantings, reservoir water levels, and drinking water reserves.
Approximately 70 percent of India's annual rainfall comes from the Southwest Monsoon. Since September is the concluding month of the monsoon, it is during this time that many summer crops, such as rice, soy, cotton, and maize, require abundant rain. Insufficient rainfall in this month can affect yields. Furthermore, many dams and reservoirs depend on these rains.
Meteorological experts emphasize that long-term weather models provide only probabilistic estimates. As September approaches, forecasts may be adjusted based on new meteorological systems and current data. Therefore, for now, this should be viewed as a preliminary signal. New forecasts from the IMD and other meteorological services in the coming days will provide a clearer and more accurate picture for September.
