The condition of the pitch in Galle is attracting the most attention ahead of the first Test match between India and Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15. It remains unclear whether the Indian team will rely on three fast bowlers or opt for spinners.
Meanwhile, the head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir, and the batting coach Sitanshu Kotak visited the Sri Lankan training ground to assess the pitch conditions while Sri Lankan players trained in nets.
Both Indian coaches went directly to the field, where ground staff removed the cover, allowing them to inspect the wicket. After Gambhir and Kotak left, the pitch was covered again. During this time, they did not observe long training sessions; their main goal was to understand the characteristics of the surface where the first game of the series would take place.
Approximately two hours after Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak left the site, the main cover was removed from the pitch. A lawnmower was then brought onto the field. Ground staff ran the machine several times along the 22-yard strip. Afterward, a soft roller was used, and the wicket was left uncovered in the sun for some time. Later, the surface was covered again.
The final nature of the pitch may be determined by how much water is applied to the field, how much grass is left, and how rollers are used over the next two days.
Although mention of Galle usually sparks discussions about spin bowling, the Indian team does not intend to make a decision based solely on old data. For the team management, the conditions of the first day of the Test also hold significant importance. If the pitch does not look too dry and worn out from the start, India might field three fast bowlers. In that case, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Baar are potential inclusions in the starting eleven. This option is available to the management team, considering the assistance provided by the new ball and the weather conditions.
If India decides to bring in an extra spinner, Kuldeep Yadav's candidacy becomes very strong. In Bumrah's absence, captain Shubman Gill needs a player who can score runs even in flat conditions, and Kuldeep could prove useful in this role. Ravindra Jadeja provides balance to the team with his batting skills. Furthermore, Saransh Jain could also be an option depending on the matchup against certain key batsmen.
