Choice between Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel in India's squad for the match against Sri Lanka

Sarfaraz Khan, who attracted public attention with his historic debut at the age of 12, now faces competition for a spot in the team at 28, where he must prove his worth on the field.

When he was only 12 years old, he played a historic match scoring 439 runs. This innings, which included 56 fours and 12 sixes, instantly made Sarfaraz Khan a star. However, his journey has been not only rapid but also full of ups and downs. More than ten years later, he finds himself again at a point where he needs to prove his place not through past achievements, but through his current performance.

Following Bi Sai Sudarshan's injury, Sarfaraz Khan was included in the Indian team for a two-match series against Sri Lanka. Sudarshan withdrew from the series due to a stress reaction in the big toe of his right foot. This tour of Sri Lanka is of great importance to Sarfaraz, as the fight for positions in the middle order of the Indian Test team is very intense. After an impressive performance for Mumbai in the U-19 category, Sarfaraz was selected for the India U-19 squad in 2013. Against South Africa, he led his team to victory, scoring a hundred runs in just 66 balls. He also left his mark in the 2014 U-19 World Cup. His average of 211 runs in six matches with an average of 70.33 demonstrates that he is not only talented but also capable of performing on major stages.

The following year, in the U-19 World Cup, he once again demonstrated his attacking prowess. In the tournament held in Bangladesh, he scored 355 runs, becoming the second highest run-scorer for the Indian batsman. In many instances, he pulled the team out of difficult situations.

In the 2015-2016 season, Sarfaraz left Mumbai and moved to Uttar Pradesh, before returning to Mumbai, continuing to score consistently in local cricket. His play brought him to the threshold of the Test team. Currently, he has 371 runs in 11 innings across 6 matches in Test cricket. His best score is 150, and his average is 37.10. He has one century and three half-centuries.

These figures are not bad, but Sarfaraz's story raises questions that go beyond statistics. The question is whether the player, who was entrusted with exceptional hopes since childhood, can secure a place at the international level?

The main strength in Sarfaraz's career has always been his talent. However, to maintain a spot in the Indian team, not only talent but also consistency is required. Rishabh Pant fell victim to off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, scoring only two runs. Ahead of the two-match series of test matches between India and Sri Lanka, starting on August 15th, the Sri Lankan team has faced significant difficulties due to injuries to two key players.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis will be unable to participate in both matches of the series. Additionally, opening batsman Pathum Nissanka will miss the first Test. It is currently unclear whether Nissanka will be able to return for the second Test.

Although the Sri Lankan team had hopes for his full recovery by the series against India, the recovery did not meet expectations, and it is now evident that he will not be able to play in either of the two Tests.
