The project team presented Casa Sodzil / Esencial Studio, a development located near Hacienda Sodzil Norte. This site is a remnant of the peak period of the henequen culture in Yucatán, retaining the physical and environmental memory of its past history.
The land, characterized by native vegetation, mature trees, and ancient stone fences known as albarradas, established a fundamental guideline for the project: to recognize and maintain pre-existing elements as a natural extension of the surrounding landscape.
The residence was conceived with a cellular arrangement, simulating a small community dispersed across the territory. In this model of autonomous pavilions, the architecture recalled the typology of traditional farms. An old aqueduct was transformed into discreet water mirrors, which help organize paths and moderate the climate through evaporation, while the original stone fences were restored and extended to weave the material memory of the site.
The architectural planning dissolves the boundaries between internal and external space through patios, corridors, and open transition zones. The vestibule recovers the vernacular character of providing refuge from the heat, awaiting entry into the common areas. The pavilion designated for social activities features large coverings that provide shade to the garden, functioning as a versatile meeting point. Parallelly, the pool service block stands out as a sculptural and subtle element within the complex, while the family pavilion ensures daily privacy.
Using an honest and durable material language—based on regional stones, local wood, lime coatings, and light roofs—Casa Sodzil pays tribute to the construction tradition of Mérida, reconciling modern habitability with respect for the location.
The Cultural Heritage Agency issued a comment regarding information circulating on social media concerning the condition of the historical site 'Chodra Hovli'.
This monument is located in the Khiv district of the Khorezm region of Uzbekistan. The agency clarified that extensive restoration work was carried out on the site from 2022 to 2023 to preserve its historical and architectural appearance.
The restoration project was implemented by the Khiv Regional Restoration Center under the commission of the Cultural Heritage Agency and was financed by state budget funds.
As part of the work, specialists repaired and reinforced the aiwans and stairs, and covered the exterior walls with adobe plaster, while the interior surfaces were finished with ganch. During the restoration, maximum deviation from modern construction methods was avoided, strictly adhering to the traditional architectural style.
In addition, the complex's territory was landscaped, including the laying of pedestrian paths and the installation of a night lighting system.
Currently, this site is under official state protection, and plans include further development of tourist infrastructure in its vicinity. It should be noted that the historical complex was built in 1871 and served as the summer residence of the Khivan Khans. The name 'Chodra' has Persian origins: it is derived from the word 'chordara', where 'chor' denotes the number four, and 'dara' denotes a steep depth.
