Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD), the longest-running educational design project in South Africa, has announced the ten finalists of its latest talent competition. The task set for the emerging designers was to create a linear lighting fixture suitable for any Nando’s restaurant worldwide.
The HYD competition, held biennially and managed through Clout/SA on behalf of Nando’s, is one of South Africa's leading initiatives in this field. Over the past decade, this platform has fostered the careers of young creatives, identifying exceptional talent and showcasing local design in Nando’s restaurants globally. Following a series of successful competitions covering areas such as patterns and benches, the sixth edition challenged creators to reimagine modern lighting, presenting a concept focused on the clean geometry of linear luminaires.
The Selection Process for the Top Ten
The selection process to determine the top 10 was extremely rigorous. The works were evaluated by a jury composed of nearly twenty industry leaders in design and former HYD winners. Among the judges were Paula Baulde Portas, who holds the position of Marketing Department Head at Maison&Objet in Paris; Tabisa Mjojo from Mash.T Design Studio; Nihil Trikam and Nindya Baktauwar from Studio Kalki; Charles Edwards, co-founder and Creative Director of Lookbook Studio; Brad O’Neill, Head of Design and Development at Nando’s South Africa; Tracy Lynch, Curator of the Nando’s Design Program and Executive Creative Director of Clout/SA; and Michael Katy, CEO of Nando’s South Africa.
The finalists were chosen from a competitive pool of almost 200 applications and were announced in early August 2026. The judges selected the following concepts: Kgomotso Monnakgotola and Kulani Keagile; Chelsea Mackin and Retabile Motaun; Bianca van Wuuren and Reneylwe Molala; Bradley van Gran and Anele Mkhize; and Ashley Whitney and Tshegofatso Mako.
These finalists will now proceed to the Nando’s Central Kitchen in Johannesburg, where they will present their concepts to a live audience of the judging panel. Five of them will be selected to participate in an intensive mentorship program designed to help them develop prototypes and refine entrepreneurial skills ahead of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer 2026 title. Tracy Lynch noted that this stage is a significant milestone for the designers. The focus then shifts from concept to physical prototype and commercialization through a series of targeted workshops and a business bootcamp, which will be overseen by experienced business trainer Claude Morris as a business design mentor.
The winner will receive an individual mentorship program, market access, opportunities to showcase their work, and participation in a community with leading South African designers, including a specialized business acceleration program to launch their design business. If their product and production process meet the requirements, their item will also be included in the Nando’s Portal for Africa—a global market accessible to interior designers developing Nando’s Casas across all its regions worldwide.
Significance of the HYD Program from Nando’s
Although there will only be one absolute winner this season, the six previous editions of Nando’s HYD have demonstrated the immense impact of this platform on its finalists, many of whom have achieved industry recognition within the HYD ecosystem. Beyond mentorship and business development, HYD connects successful designers to the global market, offering a unique marketplace within the local design industry.
