Federal Home Minister Amit Shah sent a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Omi Birla on Wednesday. In the letter, he requested time to discuss student protests related to the NEET exam leak.
In his appeal, Shah stated: 'I wish to be present in the House during the allocated time, participate in the discussion of this issue, and am ready to answer all questions raised by the opposition.'
A political crisis arose in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday after Congress leader and opposition member Mallikarjun Kharge raised questions about the absence of Home Minister Amit Shah and his silence regarding police brutality against protesting students.
Kharge stated that they would 'bring it out before the people in one day' (ek din bahar kheench ke layenge... janata ke beech), referring to the protest situation.
In New Delhi, representatives of the DMK party demanded the cancellation of the NEET exam on Tuesday. DMK MP Lok Sabha, Dayanidhi Maran, stated that the proposed amendment to the law against leakage of examination materials does not solve the main problem plaguing the entrance medical examination.
Maran emphasized that the issue remains unresolved and declared that NEET is unnecessary. He recalled that DMK and Tamil Nadu were the first to oppose NEET due to fundamental flaws in its structure. He noted that his party's warnings went unheeded.
The NEET exam replaced regional entrance tests. Although Maran focused more on his party's position against this national exam, he also touched upon recent student protests, which are a focus for opponents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to Maran, students forced parliamentarians to discuss NEET.
He alleged that smart glasses from Meta were used to record protesting students, after which the police went to their homes. Maran also mentioned that the BJP gained support from these protests, questioning the party about the reasons for its 'opposition' to them.
The BJP is interested in gaining DMK's support to push for a constitutional amendment regarding women's reservation starting in 2029, as well as to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha by more than 50 percent. Furthermore, Maran stated that he and NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule were unable to use WhatsApp broadcasts for three days due to message forwarding restrictions. He added that there was an incident where the Prime Minister's post was mistakenly deleted, and the government sought explanations from the head of Meta, noting that such incidents happen to MPs as well.
