Proteas captain Temba Bavuma is focused on regaining physical fitness with the Lions team to prepare for the upcoming Australian tour. Coach Shukri Conrad prioritizes his rehabilitation and readiness for the test series matches.
Conrad believes it is advisable to be careful with Temba Bavuma at the early stage of the season, especially considering the approaching major series against England and Australia. Bavuma, who captains the Proteas in ODI and Test formats, has not played internationally since December last year and only participated in a few matches for the newly formed EUT20 Belgium franchise in June.
The planned baseball tour to Namibia could have been a suitable moment for Bavuma's gradual return to the international arena, but instead, his teammate from the Lions, Bjorn Fortuin, will represent Proteas in Windhoek.
In the last two years, Bavuma has faced numerous injuries, including hamstring, calf, and elbow problems, so Conrad believes that it is best for the 36-year-old player to continue rehabilitation within domestic cricket with the Lions.
Conrad stated that Temba's condition is good and he is fully ready, noting that he is undergoing preparation and will play in some friendly matches with the Lions that will have a longer format.
Conrad consulted with the Lions coaches regarding Bavuma's return program, paying special attention to the Australian series, which starts with the first ODI on September 24th in Kingsmead. He mentioned that he discussed this matter with Allan Donald and Russell (Domingo), and Temba will participate in many friendly games. The main objective is the ODI series against Australia, as well as, more importantly, the Test series against Australia, since all tests are a priority in preparation for the summer.
The coach expressed confidence in Temba's condition and confirmed that he will definitely take the field in the first ODI against Australia. Previously, Bavuma played a key role against the Australians in the final of the World Test Championship in Lord's last year, where his half-century contribution in the second innings helped Proteas win its first major trophy in 27 years. Unfortunately, during this match, he suffered a hamstring strain and was sidelined for some time, and later sustained a calf strain during the tour of England last year.
Despite this, Bavuma's importance to Proteas, especially the Test team, was demonstrated by him scoring another crucial unbeaten half-century in the first match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, which led the team to its first Test victory on Indian soil in 15 years. Proteas continued the series by winning the second match in Guwahati, securing a memorable and historic 2-0 series victory.
