The number of wealthy individuals in India is growing, and the activities of business families are constantly expanding. According to a new report from Barclays and Hurun India, the aggregate net worth of the three largest business dynasties in India is estimated at 42 trillion rupees as of June 2026, equivalent to approximately 42 lakh crore rupees. These three families include billionaires Mukesh Ambani, K.M. Birla, and the Jindal family.
The combined capital of these three families accounts for about 9% of the market capitalization of public companies in India. The report indicates that over the last year, the value of assets of these three leading families increased by 1.57 lakh crore rupees, bringing their total valuation to $444 billion or 42 trillion rupees.
In the ranking of India's wealthiest families, the Mukesh Ambani family, chairman of Reliance, ranks first with assets valued at 25.8 lakh crore rupees. This is followed by the K.M. Birla family, which possesses family capital of 8.1 lakh crore rupees, one-third less than Ambani's. The Jindal family is in third place, with assets valued at 8 lakh crore rupees.
The scope of family business operations in India is significantly broader than just the top three companies. According to the report, the aggregate valuation of 300 family businesses is 138 trillion rupees, or about $1.46 trillion, exceeding the GDP of countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Poland.
As of June 2026, the aggregate net worth of the ten richest families in India reached 70.5 lakh crore rupees, up from 69 trillion rupees the previous year. The threshold for inclusion in this top-10 also increased by approximately 14% over the year, reaching 2.5 lakh crore rupees, indicating rapid growth in the value of major family enterprises.
According to the Barclays and Hurun India report, the Anil Agarwal family, managing the Vedanta group, demonstrated the most significant jump in the rankings. After an increase in valuation of 74.7% over the year, they moved up three positions to take sixth place in the top-10 list.
In the first-generation family category, Gautam Adani from the Adani Group family became the leader, with a net worth estimated at 19.57 lakh crore rupees. He is followed by the Sunil Bharti Mittal family of Indian Airtel, with assets amounting to 12.1 lakh crore rupees. The third spot in this group was taken by Dileep Singhvi, founder of Sun Pharma Industries, with a valuation of 4.54 lakh crore rupees.
Not all Indian business families have increased their capital. Family businesses related to the IT sector, such as the Nadar family of HCL Technologies and the Premji family of Wipro, shifted in the rankings: the HCL family dropped to eighth place, and Wipro to ninth. The value of their family businesses decreased by 38% and 2.3% respectively during this period.
