The Private BPROM Residence, located near a calm river on the outskirts of Riga, Latvia, was conceived to celebrate Baltic ethnography, blending ancient local practices with the comfort of contemporary life. This project was designed as a summer house, encompassing both a family dwelling and a guest house equipped with a sauna.
The owners, who reside abroad, desired a home that would reconnect them to their roots. The design was based on regional craftsmanship, recovering traditional materials that have defined Latvian architecture over centuries, such as reed roofing and charred wood facades. The sauna house follows the traditional alignment of Latvian rural properties, positioned on the same axis as the main residence.
The architectural firm OAD sought to incorporate organic elements of nature into both the architecture and the interior design, meeting the client's desire for greater proximity to the environment. This is manifested in wavy patterns on the charred wood facade, in the upper floor decking boards that follow the natural curves of the wood, and in the structure of the house itself, which mirrors the gentle curve of the adjacent river. In the main area, large openings face the meadow, encouraging residents to interact with the local fauna and garden.
Inside, every aspect was meticulously planned to provide a tactile and emotional experience. Shades of blue create a serene and welcoming atmosphere, while custom-made furniture and selected artwork reflect the residents' personalities. There was a clear preference for using local artisans and suppliers in the selection of materials. The main dwelling takes the form of an elongated curve.
The office and guest room are situated on the upper floor, while the master bedroom subtly recesses into a deeper space, establishing an atmosphere of intimate refuge, accentuated by soft shades of purple and translucent linen curtains in the same tone. The Baltic seasons are inseparable from regular visits to the 'pirts' (sauna), a deeply rooted cultural ritual. The sauna house offers a private space for rest and experiencing these ancient traditions. On the ground floor, the building features a living room, a cold immersion pool, and the sauna room, complementing the upstairs bedroom. The circular geometry of the living room functions as a natural visual focus, promoting warmth and interaction in the space.
Thus, the Private BPROM Residence establishes a connection between historical legacy and contemporary life, allowing its inhabitants to reconnect with the culture and landscape of the region.
The description provided by the project team indicates that the land for the Casa RDH project is located in the Sihoť district of Bratislava. This location has a unique setting, situated on the Devínska route, where two distinct landscapes meet.
On one side, there is the wooded slope of the Carpathian massif, while on the other side there is a serene stretch of the Danube River. Additionally, the residence is close to a recognized horticultural center, which gives the plot a notable presence in the surrounding area.
