The internet was traditionally considered a space for human activity, where users opened websites, read news, searched for information, and made purchases. However, a significant transformation is occurring online: the share of traffic from humans is decreasing, while machine traffic is rapidly growing.
According to Cloudflare data, in June 2026, more than half of all internet traffic came not from people, but from machines. These machines include artificial intelligence systems, parsers, and other automated mechanisms. The company notes that the internet is entering a phase where AI agents independently visit websites to collect data instead of humans.
This shift is substantial, as Cloudflare previously predicted that bot traffic would surpass human traffic by 2027. In March, the company's CEO, Matthew Prince, stated that due to the rapid growth of AI, bot traffic could exceed human traffic by 2027. However, the company's current data shows that this transition has occurred earlier than planned.
To understand this process, consider a simple example. A person wanting to buy a new watch would likely visit several websites to compare prices and features. Meanwhile, an AI agent can simultaneously visit thousands of web pages, gather all necessary information, and then synthesize it into a single answer for the user.
Cloudflare's CEO noted in March that a person might study product information by viewing about five websites, whereas an AI agent can consult thousands of resources to perform the same task. This means that one human query generates significantly less traffic than a similar query from an AI agent.
Cloudflare reported in July 2026 that for the first time in internet history, over 50% of traffic was non-human. Simply put, out of every hundred requests to websites, more than 50 are from systems other than humans. It is important to emphasize that this refers to the number of requests, not a sharp decline in the number of internet users.
This machine traffic includes search crawlers, AI systems, other automated tools, and various types of bots. Previously, in April, Cloudflare indicated that about 32% of traffic on its networks came from automated systems, including search crawlers, advertising networks, and AI systems.
The situation has changed drastically in a short period. The internet has become a primary source of data for AI, as AI systems require a vast amount of information to generate high-quality answers. Therefore, companies developing AI are continuously studying website content.
According to Cloudflare data for June, 52% of requests coming from crawlers were used for AI training, a significant increase compared to 22% in spring 2025. This demonstrates a sharp increase in crawler activity related to AI training in just one year.
Simultaneously, the number of crawlers performing search functions, AI agent operations, and training is increasing. The difference between how a human views five sites and how AI reviews thousands can completely change the internet in the future.
Imagine a scenario of searching for hotels for a trip: a person would open several sites, compare prices, and make a decision. But if an AI agent performs this task, it can simultaneously analyze dozens or hundreds of hotel websites, travel portals, and reviews, and then provide the user with the optimal option. Thus, in the future, people will delegate information searching to AI, which will operate on the network itself.
Cloudflare asserts that this shift is changing how the internet is used: users are increasingly asking AI one question and receiving an answer, rather than gathering information themselves from multiple resources.
This trend is causing the most concern among website owners. While it may be beneficial for companies developing AI, it creates new difficulties for site owners. The revenue of most websites directly depends on the number of human visitors who read content, view ads, and interact with page elements.
However, if an AI agent extracts the necessary information from a site and passes it directly to the user, bypassing the resource visit, the site does not receive human traffic. At the same time, AI systems continue to consume the site's data. Consequently, the information is used, but guaranteed revenue from human readers may not materialize.
