Residents of Great Britain were shocked when a local radio station announced the 'end of life of King Charles III'. However, this turned out to be an employee's mistake.

The UK media regulator Ofcom acknowledged that Radio Caroline violated broadcasting rules by accidentally broadcasting a posthumous speech about King Charles.

According to a BBC report, the British radio station inadvertently aired this posthumous speech about King Charles on May 19 during technical work in the studio.

Details indicate that an employee, acting out of curiosity, opened pre-prepared files intended for the event of the monarch's death, subsequently panicking over the action taken.

The announcement of the British king's demise was repeated three times, followed by the national anthem. Half an hour after the incident, Radio Caroline issued a denial and apologized, which sparked controversy in the United Kingdom.

South Africa is rich in museums: it has large institutions dedicated to the country's political history, as well as historical sites that often appear on travelers' lists. However, the most memorable museum experiences can be found in much more modest places.

These small exhibitions, located on side streets of Cape Town, inside operating laundries in Mossel Bay, or near the N2 highway by Albertina, are dedicated to diverse themes—from dogs and perfumery to old washing machines and miniature towns. Although visiting them may not take a whole day, the stories they tell are often far grander than their size suggests.

Below are some of the lesser-known and more unusual museums in the country worth deviating from the route for.

In Cape Town, there is a museum entirely dedicated to man's best friend. The Dog Museum opened on Kirum Street in July 2024 and became the first dog museum in South Africa. Located in a historic city center building, it explores the relationship between humans and dogs through exhibitions covering the history of dogs in South Africa, their influence on culture and art, and over 40 personal stories provided by dog owners.

This museum is intentionally less formal than traditional establishments; visitors can interact with some exhibits, and well-trained dogs on leashes are welcome inside, although the museum is fully indoors and contains fragile items.

Inside Groote Schuur Hospital is a museum related to one of the most significant moments in medical history. On December 3, 1967, Dr. Christian Barnard and his team performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant at this hospital. The Cape Town Heart Museum preserves and interprets the history of this operation, guiding visitors through the rooms associated with the procedure and presenting the people who made it possible.

The museum's location adds a special appeal: it is not just an exhibition about a historical event, but the hospital where it took place, making the experience more immediate.

In Franschhoek, scent transforms into an unexpectedly fascinating cultural experience through perfumery. The first South African perfume museum, founded by the Kouman family, houses a collection of perfume bottles, ranging from antique specimens to modern designer pieces. The museum studies the history and craft of perfumery, while the neighboring Kouman Perfumery offers workshops where guests can learn more about fragrance creation.

The museum is part of the broader Huguenot heritage in Franschhoek, and entry is also linked to other nearby heritage attractions, including the Huguenot Memorial Museum and the Huguenot Monument.

From perfumery to submarines—these are radically different museum experiences. SAS Assegaai is a decommissioned South African Navy submarine converted into a museum in Simon's Town. The 'Daphne'-class submarine, built in France, served in the South African Navy before being preserved as a tourist attraction. After restoration, it reopened in 2025 and offers a rare glimpse into what life was like inside an active submarine.

Inside, the narrow passages, compact living quarters, and machinery give visitors an idea of how confined life aboard a submarine could have been.

Museums preserve both major historical events and everyday objects that might otherwise disappear. The Cape Town Children's Museum examines what it meant to grow up in South Africa through toys, games, photographs, stories, and memories. The museum's focus on childhood across different generations and communities makes it as nostalgic a journey for adults as it is a walk for children.

It is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, and admission is free.

An unexpected place to visit might be the laundry museum. This is what makes the Janine Ironing and Laundry Museum interesting. The collection includes over 640 irons, including rare specimens, as well as more than 50 historical washing machines and presses dating back to the 19th century. The collection began in 1976 when Jan Ellis acquired a large group of irons to prevent them from being sold abroad. It later became a museum in memory of his daughter, Janine Verburgt.

What starts as a collection of household items becomes a surprisingly detailed look at domestic technology and the often underestimated labor involved in keeping clothes clean and smooth. The museum is located inside a laundry, not in a traditional museum building, and visitors are asked to check with staff regarding viewing the collection.

Near Albertina, close to the N2 highway, there is a stop that resembles more an immersion into a miniature world than a visit to a typical museum. Tuinplaas is home to Tiny Town—a collection of ceramic replicas created by the Kotsi family after more than two decades of working with cement and decorative design. The site also includes a farm museum, a kennel, a fairy garden, a coffee shop, and a traditional South African restaurant.

Its location makes it particularly suitable for road tourists, as it is situated right along the N2 highway before the turnoff to Albertina, allowing for a break without turning the day trip into a major detour.

Another small museum that rewards a slower pace of viewing is the Toy and Miniature Museum in Stellenbosch. The collection includes 1:12 scale miniatures, miniature houses, rooms, antique dolls, cars, and toys. A standout exhibit is the detailed miniature 'Blue Train,' which travels through a tiny South African landscape from Stellenbosch through the Winelands and mountains towards the Karoo before returning to Stellenbosch.

The museum is part of the Stellenbosch Museum collection, which also includes the Village Museum and VOC Kruithuis, allowing the visit to become a broader cultural event.

The Ditsongha Pioneer Museum in Pretoria is even more unique. Instead of simply displaying past artifacts, it aims to recreate a way of life. The museum centers around an 1848 house built from clay and local materials with a thatched roof and earthen floors. It is furnished in a 19th-century rural style and surrounded by a traditional garden, orchard, stable, and vineyard. Guides dressed in period costumes help bring the setting to life.

The site offers a glimpse into the pioneer years through demonstrations and educational programs, including traditional food preparation and agricultural methods. South African History Online notes this farm as a place where visitors can see recreated historical agricultural techniques and activities.

These places may not possess the scale of South Africa's largest museums, but that is often their charm. The collection of old irons can offer a window into daily life. The submarine can make naval history tangible. A room full of perfume bottles can tell stories of craft and culture, and a miniature railway can make the entire landscape small enough to fit in your hands.

Perhaps this is the true joy of these places. They remind us that history is not only found in monuments and grand institutions. Sometimes it is hidden in a laundry, a hospital, a suburban mill, or a roadside garden. So, next time you travel through South Africa, leave some room in your itinerary for the unexpected.
