The world is enjoying the fragrances of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, as the region's perfumery has gained global recognition due to its centuries-old heritage and unparalleled scents.
The state government's 'One District One Product' (ODOP) program has given a new impetus to this traditional industry.
Thanks to this government initiative, new and small entrepreneurs in Kannauj receive direct support to shape their identity and expand their businesses. To date, this program has assisted 143 entrepreneurs, including 43 women, by providing them with a grant of 94.99 million rupees in the form of working capital. Entrepreneurs are provided with support such as easy bank loans, training, toolkits, and low-cost stalls at international exhibitions.
Kannauj's perfumery industry has a long history and is known worldwide for its unique aroma. Here, there is high demand in the Gulf countries and other nations for perfumery made from natural flowers, plants, herbs, as well as rose, white jasmine, hops, mehndi, shamanma, agar, and oud.
Through the ODOP program, this perfumery, created from natural products, is now delivered to domestic and international markets without any risks.
Under the ODOP program, special training was conducted for approximately 1275 beneficiaries to develop skills in perfume and incense production. The district administration also distributed toolkits among all those who underwent training. Among those who utilized this training program and toolkit, there are 544 women who are now becoming self-sufficient and participating in this traditional industry.
Small and medium-sized perfumery enterprises are provided with stalls at major fairs and exhibitions at reduced costs, giving them better opportunities to sell their products. This also gives them a chance to establish themselves in the global market. Furthermore, the government stimulates their products, which greatly benefits new perfumery entrepreneurs by alleviating their fear of business risks.
Seventeen entrepreneurs (including 7 ODOP women entrepreneurs) were given the opportunity to participate in fairs in the state and other regions. Additionally, a special 'Perfume Park' has been built in Tathia Kannauj, located along the Lucknow-Agra expressway, to modernize the perfumery business in the city, where entrepreneurs are provided space to set up production units.
Nirdha, one of the few perfumery entrepreneurs who benefited from ODOP, considers the program extremely positive for both traditional and new businesses. She reported that her business grew significantly thanks to receiving loans and stalls at government exhibitions. Many other women are now working with her. Nirdha wishes more daughters and sisters to join this business and achieve financial independence.
Entrepreneur Abhinay Gupta stated that around two and a half to three thousand people are employed in this sector in Kannauj. He started working by taking a loan of 500,000 rupees. Previously, the product was mainly sold as raw material, but now, thanks to improved packaging and marketing, it is gaining new recognition in the global market. This program has stimulated the business, which had slowed down after the pandemic, leading to a direct increase in its income by 30 percent.
Another entrepreneur, Brahanesh Kushwaha, noted that the biggest advantage of the ODOP program is the ability to showcase their products on national and international platforms. This allows them to find large buyers in retail and wholesale, increasing demand for the products. Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh government itself stimulates these entrepreneurs by purchasing perfumery for gifting on various occasions, which has contributed to improving production capacity and increasing their potential.
