According to data published on Monday, there have been no significant changes in India's labor market over the past year. The Ministry of Statistics reported that during the quarter from April to June of the current fiscal year, the unemployment rate and the share of the workforce in the country remained stable.
This means that the unemployment figures are approximately the same as last year. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Statistics on Monday, the unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in this quarter, compared to 5.6 percent a year earlier. Unemployment measures the proportion of the working-age population that is not employed.
Within the periodic labor force survey conducted by the National Statistical Office under the ministry, the situation in the urban labor market was deemed stable. This indicates that the number of jobs in cities has neither decreased nor increased. This study assesses labor force participation and unemployment rates.
The annual trend shows that the unemployment rate in urban areas decreased from 7.1 percent in June of last year to 6.6 percent in June 2026. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in rural areas remained generally unchanged.
The overall labor force participation rate, which reflects the proportion of the working-age population employed or actively seeking employment, reached 54.4 percent in June of this year. This figure matched the previous month's figure and slightly exceeded the 54.2 percent recorded in June 2025.
The study also revealed that the gender gap among the working population narrowed in rural areas compared to urban areas. The female labor force participation rate in rural areas rose to 36.6 percent in June of this year, which is 1.4 percentage points higher than 35.2 percent in June 2025.
Conversely, female participation in urban areas slightly decreased to 24.8 percent, compared to 25.2 percent in June of last year, indicating a slight reduction in employment opportunities for women in cities.
The overall worker headcount ratio in rural areas remained at 53.8 percent; it was the same as the previous month and 0.5 percentage points higher than 53.3 percent recorded in June of last year.
The Ministry of Statistics clarified that the total worker count aged 15 and above was estimated based on projected demographic data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
On average, about 566 million people in the country were employed between April and June 2026, of whom 402 million were men and 164 million were women.
