The 2026 El Niño is showing an accelerated and atypical development, potentially exceeding the intensity of the event that occurred in 1997/98, one of the most severe documented. Experts warn that the exact magnitude of the effects is still difficult to predict.
According to IFLScience, this phenomenon has already surpassed the threshold classified as 'super El Niño,' increasing the risk of heatwaves, droughts, floods, and difficulties in agricultural production in various areas.
El Niño manifests when waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific register temperatures above average. It is part of the ENSO cycle, which also includes La Niña and neutral periods.
The classification is established when the sea surface temperature in that region reaches at least 0.5°C above the historical average. This threshold was reached at the beginning of June, as predicted by climate models.
However, the rate of warming has drawn attention. In mid-August, temperatures in the eastern Pacific registered an increase of 2.6°C above normal. The speed and strength the event has already shown are remarkable.
If the trend persists, the phenomenon could consolidate as the most powerful El Niño ever recorded, with the peak projected for late 2026. Although the main result is the increase in global temperatures, its influence extends beyond heat.
Regional impacts and concerns
Among the predicted effects, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, eastern Australia, southern Africa, northern Amazon, and India should face drier conditions and weakening monsoons. For Zeke Hausfather, this aspect represents a major concern due to the potential damage to crops.
The 1997/98 El Niño served as a warning about this vulnerability, as at that time, thousands of individuals lost their lives globally due to droughts, floods, famine, extreme heat, and disease outbreaks.
It is not yet possible to determine if 2026 will bring consequences comparable to those of 1997/98, given that scientists are observing behavior that diverges from known patterns.
