The consolidated profit after tax of Hyundai Motor India Limited decreased by 35.1% compared to the previous year, amounting to 888.62 crore rupees for the quarter ending June 30, 2026. According to the company's report filed with the stock exchange, operating income slightly declined while overall expenses increased.
First Quarter Financial Performance
Consolidated operating income decreased by 0.5%, reaching 16,334.63 crore rupees compared to 16,412.88 crore rupees in the same quarter last year. Total costs rose by 4.2%, increasing to 15,407.35 crore rupees from 14,780.47 crore rupees.
Profit before tax dropped by 34.9%, falling from 1,847.20 crore rupees to 1,201.65 crore rupees. Earnings per share decreased to 10.94 rupees from 16.85 rupees.
Reasons for Profit Decline
The profit decline was attributed to several factors. The cost of raw materials increased by 0.5% to 11,894.76 crore rupees, and employee benefit expenses rose by 20%, reaching 749.02 crore rupees. Additionally, other expenses grew by 10.6% to 2,213.98 crore rupees, and depreciation and amortization increased by 5.5% to 557.10 crore rupees.
Despite an increase in other income by 27.7% to 274.37 crore rupees, this increase was insufficient to offset the drop in operating income and the rise in expenses.
Company Margins and Operations
The profit margin before tax, calculated relative to operating income, shrank from 11.3% to 7.4%, representing a decrease of approximately 390 basis points. The net profit margin fell from 8.3% to 5.4%, which is a drop of about 290 basis points. Hyundai Motor India and its subsidiaries operate as a single segment covering automobiles, engines, transmissions, other parts, after-sales service, engineering, and brokerage services. The report did not disclose data on vehicle sales volumes, export sales, average revenue, or category-wise figures.
Vehicle Disposal Obligations
The company stated that the Environmental Protection Rules (End-of-Life Vehicles) 2025 require it to fulfill vehicle disposal obligations by obtaining Extended Producer Responsibility certificates. This obligation applies to vehicles sold in the domestic market, as well as those used for personal purposes from April 1, 2005, to June 30, 2026. The company has not recognized a provision because the pricing mechanism for certificates, implementation details, and operational procedures have not yet been finalized. Furthermore, the company's registration on the centralized online portal was pending approval, meaning it lacked sufficient data to assess the potential financial impact.
Dividends and Management Changes
The board of directors set August 5, 2026, as the record date for the payment of a final dividend of 21 rupees per share. The dividend was announced on May 8 and remains subject to shareholder approval at the annual general meeting scheduled for August 26.
