SRT, the high-performance division of Dodge and Ram, has unveiled an electric compressor designed to solve the problem known as turbo lag, which is the delay in turbocharger response at low RPMs. This system, named eBoost Air, was implemented in a prototype model of the Jeep Grand Cherokee that uses the six-cylinder inline Hurricane 3.0 biturbo engine. SRT itself clarified that this concept does not yet have a scheduled application in mass-produced vehicles.
The technological setup consists of three essential elements: a 48-volt electric compressor, an energy storage device, and an electronically controlled bypass valve. When positioned before the turbos, eBoost Air establishes an alternative path for intake air and activates when there is insufficient exhaust gas to drive the turbines. According to SRT, this system can generate a pressure of 0.69 bar (equivalent to 10 psi) in just 650 milliseconds, reaching 90% of maximum torque. However, in the tested prototype, its operation is limited to approximately three seconds due to the capacity of the battery used.
Although SRT calls the device an electric turbo, its functioning resembles that of an electric compressor because it is activated by energy stored in the battery and operates autonomously from the exhaust-driven turbines. This approach differs from that employed by Porsche in the 911 model, where an electric motor is integrated directly into the turbo. The development, from initial sketch to functional prototype, took seven weeks.
It is important to note that the electric compressor, by itself, does not result in a power increase; its benefit lies in optimizing low-RPM response, which allows for a more aggressive engine calibration and a more robust sizing of the turbines. In the prototype, the Hurricane engine raised its original values of 558 hp and 73.4 kgfm from the standard HO version to estimates between 629 hp and 649 hp, with about 82.9 kgfm, although the exact variation depends on the source, as SRT has not released official power data.
The observed performance gain in the prototype is primarily due to a slight reduction in compression ratio, a new calibration, and reinforcements applied to the transmission. For this concept, the compressor is powered by a 48-volt, 1 Ah battery, which is recharged both by a converter and a higher-capacity 12-volt alternator. The engineering team is exploring other options, such as replacing the battery with capacitors.
Joel Baker, SRT's Vice President of Propulsion Engineering, commented that there is still a long way to go but emphasized that low-RPM torque 'opens many opportunities.' He also mentioned the possibility of evolving eBoost Air for the four-cylinder Hurricane 2.0 turbo engine, which is used by Stellantis in the Jeep Compass, Commander, and Ram Rampage models in Brazil. SRT continues to analyze the ideal size and capacity of the energy storage system, a factor that determines how many times the compressor can be consecutively activated. The company has not confirmed whether this technology will be incorporated into production models, the accessory market, or smaller engines.

At 13:30, Bharat Forge shares suddenly began to decline, trading at a price of 2264 rupees, and by 15:00, they collapsed by approximately 9%, reaching the level of 2056 rupees. The sharp drop led to a decrease in the company's market capitalization. Although the decline slowed down by the close of trading, the shares still corrected by 6.76%, ending the trading session at 2112 rupees. The company's market capitalization fell to 1.01 lakh crore rupees.
