The Indian team is preparing to play a two-match trial series against Sri Lanka. Questions arose regarding Kuldeep Yadav's place in the starting lineup before this match. During a three-day practice match against Sri Lanka XI, Kuldeep did not bowl in the second half of the game. However, the team management assured that this was not related to physical condition issues.
Nevertheless, a serious question remains: whether Kuldeep will get a chance in the first test, starting in Galle on August 15, or if he will be left on the bench again. This issue is particularly important because a similar situation recently occurred with Kuldeep Yadav. During the series in the UAE against England, he was part of the Indian squad but could not make the starting XI in any of the three matches.
During the three-day trial match against Sri Lanka XI, Kuldeep Yadav bowled 18 overs in the first half, taking two wickets. Nevertheless, he did not participate in bowling in the second half. Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Sutara, and Saransh Jain bowled. Kuldeep's absence from bowling immediately before the Test series raised concerns about his physical fitness.
The Indian team's coach, spinner Siraj Batule, calmed the situation, stating that there was no cause for concern. According to Batule, Kuldeep bowled around 18 overs in the match, as well as two or three overs before the game. He took a break to assess his body's reaction.
Siraj Batule explained: 'Kuldeep bowled around 20 overs. There were 18 in the match, plus two or three before. His performance was quite good. He just wanted to take a break to see how his body felt.' Following this clarification, it became clear that he was not sidelined due to a new injury.
The selection combination for the Indian team will be interesting. The pitch in the practice match was initially not very favorable for spinners, but as the game progressed, they started getting turn. In Galle, the influence of spin may also increase. Such conditions make Kuldeep Yadav a strong contender. His wrist spin provides India with a different type of attack, allowing him to deceive batsmen in the air and take wickets, making him an aggressive option in the Test.
The most interesting aspect of Kuldeep Yadav's career is the disparity between his performance and the opportunities he has received. He debuted in Tests in March 2017, but after nine years, he has only played 18 matches. In these games, he has taken 79 wickets at an average of 22.35. Thus, despite limited opportunities, his statistics look impressive. Furthermore, he has 194 and 95 wickets in international ODI and T20 matches, respectively. Despite these figures, the team composition often placed him in an unfavorable position.
Ravindra Jadeja always has very strong chances of being in the starting XI, as he contributes both with bat and with ball. The real decision will have to be made later, depending on how many spinners India decides to field. If the team opts for two specialized spinners, Kuldeep's chances will strengthen. However, a shift in priorities towards squad depth or an extra fast bowler could change the situation. The fact that the team allowed Manav Sutara and Saransh Jain to bowl sufficiently in the practice match suggests that the team management wants to keep its options open.
