To make the process of booking railway tickets faster, more convenient, and reliable, the railway is modernizing its Passenger Reservation System (PRS). The new system will be able to handle a significantly larger volume of load compared to the current one. According to the railway, the updated Passenger Reservation System will be capable of processing over 1.5 million ticket bookings and more than 4 million passenger requests per minute. Currently, the existing system handles approximately 32,000 bookings and 4 million requests per minute.
The Railway Information Systems Centre (CRIS) developed the Passenger Reservation System about four decades ago. This system, launched in 1986, transformed manual registration log keeping and counter booking into an electronic format. In the 1990s, the system's network expanded to various zones of the railway. Following this, online ticket booking began in 2002, and the next-generation electronic ticketing system (NGeT) was launched in 2014. Today, a large part of the railway booking system relies on this technical structure.
The need to update the Passenger Reservation System arose due to the rapid growth of online ticket booking. According to railway statistics, between June 2025 and June 2026, 65.08 billion reserved tickets were booked through PRS. Of these, 57.90 billion tickets were purchased online, accounting for about 89% of all bookings. By July 2026, the share of online booking in total ticket sales reached 89.84%. Over this period, more than 5.72 billion online user accounts and over 500 thousand concurrent users/sessions were registered.
In May of this year, the railway announced that the transition to the new Passenger Reservation System would begin in phases starting from August 2026. According to the railway, the phased transition has already begun, and the new beta version of the IRCTC website is part of this transition. According to Dharmandra Tewari, the railway's Additional General Manager for Public Relations, during the migration from the old PRS to the new system, a layer-by-layer mapping will be carried out between the new user-friendly website and the old system. For this, load-based testing is conducted slowly and steadily to avoid sudden excessive pressure on the system.
According to IRCTC, the speed of ticket booking improved after the launch of the beta site on July 15. Compared to the first and second periods of the month, urgent bookings completed within three minutes increased by more than 5%. Similarly, bookings in the five-minute window grew by 3%, and in the thirty-minute window—by more than 2%.
The Passenger Reservation System is the core computerized mechanism of the railway booking system. It manages functions such as ticket booking, cancellation, and modification, as well as seat allocation, waiting lists, RAC, reservation schedules, and passenger requests. Connected to this system are railway counters, the IRCTC website, the mobile application, the RailOne app, and authorized agents. Thus, the entire process of long-distance ticket booking across the country is carried out through the Passenger Reservation System.
Passengers themselves will benefit the most from the new system, especially in terms of booking speed and request processing. This is particularly important during urgent bookings when a large number of users access the system simultaneously, and here the high throughput of the Passenger Reservation System is crucial. The railway has reduced the Advance Reservation Period (ARP)—the limit for advance booking—from 120 days to 60 days. Urgent booking with Aadhaar authentication was launched in July 2025, and later OTP verification was added.
According to the railway, the new Passenger Reservation System will be based on modern technologies. The planned technologies include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), big data analytics, cloud computing, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and AR/VR. The existing PRS was launched in 2010 on Itanium servers and the OpenVMS platform. The system, designed for the needs of that time, now faces growing digital traffic and pressure from online booking. The new system is being prepared to be cloud-oriented, multilingual, and more user-friendly.
