Most consumer electronics in China enter the market through manufacturing chains in Shenzhen or Shanghai. However, the sensor level underlying this electronics is increasingly passing through Bengbu—a second-tier industrial city in Anhui Province that has developed a sensor cluster over two decades, known as the Chinese Sensor Valley.
Within one 8-inch MEMS fab, the entire sensor platform for the next generation of artificial intelligence hardware is produced. The key enterprise is Anhui Huaxin MicroNano Integrated Circuit, or Huaxin MicroNano. By the end of 2025, the fab reached full design capacity—10,000 eight-inch MEMS wafers monthly, with key production processes, main production equipment, and full-scale operations controlled entirely domestically. It is planned that by 2027, the monthly capacity will increase to 30,000 wafers, making this facility the largest domestic base for specialized MEMS wafer production by volume.
The commercial potential of the fab is already evident. In 2025, signed orders amounted to 104 million yuan, with recognized revenue reaching 33 million yuan. By June 2026, the company had 27 active contracts worth 176 million yuan and 42 products in tape-out, including inertial, environmental, and pressure sensors, as well as MEMS actuators. The application spectrum corresponds to categories where Chinese demand is growing fastest: automotive electronics for tire pressure and chassis orientation sensors, industrial monitoring, medical devices, and consumer equipment.
The sensor cluster is not limited to the fab. The Northern Anhui Microelectronics Research Institute utilizes Bengbu's historical electronic base—the Institute of the 214th Group of China North Industries Group, founded there in 1979—to advance flexible electrodes for BCI and data collection chips. Their portable brain signal recording helmet with multiple modalities is already being tested with China Southern Power Grid and ten other clients, with 150 units sold. A hand rehabilitation system using motor imagery showed a 20 percent improvement in recovery in a controlled study involving 15 patients and 300 trials, and it concluded a commercial contract worth 5.5 million yuan. An early screening model for Alzheimer's disease demonstrated 90 percent accuracy among 51 patients.
The strategic logic is that MEMS, flexible electrodes, and clinical application are on the same horizontal level. The Bengbu model aims not to win in any single device category but to control the entire chain from wafer to patient bed. The city launched the Sensor Valley as an investment platform worth 50.6 billion yuan, with the state industrial fund now controlling Huaxin MicroNano after the equity restructuring in 2025. An IPO application is planned for the Science and Technology Innovation Council in 2029. If the current trajectory continues, the inconspicuous middle of the AI hardware stack will become one of the most strategically controlled segments by China this decade.
