Typhoon Dolphin has reached the eastern coast of China. Given the severity of the storm, the China Meteorological Administration declared a red alert on Sunday. A period of strong winds and heavy rainfall began in the coastal areas of Zhejiang province.
Meteorologists specified that Dolphin's influence will not be limited to the sea and coastline; the storm may move further inland and cause heavy precipitation in many parts of China. According to data from the National Meteorological Department (NMD), Typhoon Dolphin made landfall on the eastern coast between Sanmen in Zhejiang province and Fuding in Fujian province.
NMD chief forecaster Wang Haiping stated that prolonged intense rainfall and dangerous storm impact are expected. This necessitated the declaration of a red alert. The main problems for residents in coastal areas have been powerful gusts of wind and incessant rain. Low-lying areas have experienced difficulties in daily life due to flooding.
In Eastern China, the Hangzhou Bay area, and along the Zhejiang coast, wind speeds could reach Force 9–12. Near the storm's center, gusts are forecast to intensify up to Force 15–16. Under such conditions, going outside or visiting marine areas poses an extremely high risk.
Considering all the complexities, the administration is accelerating preparations for public safety measures. Even after making landfall, Dolphin will gradually weaken, but its effects may be felt for several days. Furthermore, heavy rains are expected in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and the northern regions of Shandong and Liaoning from Thursday to Sunday.
Due to this threat, China has raised its emergency response plan from Level-3 to Level-2. It should be noted that warm seawater is the primary cause of typhoon formation. When water heats up, a large amount of moisture rises, forming a low-pressure area. Surrounding winds then begin to move rapidly toward this area. Due to the Earth's rotation, they start to spin. If the sea remains warm and other weather conditions are favorable, this system gradually intensifies and develops into a typhoon.
