If you enjoy combining travel with active recreation such as trekking, Kalwantine Fort in Maharashtra could be an exciting destination for you. This fort, located about 50 kilometers from Mumbai, is known for its steep ascent and challenging routes. Accessing it requires navigating very narrow and uneven steps, making this hike demanding.
Kalwantine Fort is situated between Panvel and Matheran and stands at an altitude of approximately 2300 feet. Its uniqueness lies precisely in the path to it. During the ascent, one must climb steep stairs carved into the rocks. A significant portion of these steps lacks railings or reliable support, so good physical fitness, balance, and caution are crucial for trekking.
After overcoming the difficult climb and reaching the top of the fortress, visitors enjoy magnificent views that help forget their fatigue. From here, a picturesque panorama of mountains, valleys, and surrounding areas opens up. On a clear day, landscapes such as Matheran, Chandri, and Irshal can be seen.
There are various opinions regarding the history of Kalwantine Fort. According to some data, its original name was Muranjan Fort. Another version suggests it was named after a queen named Kalwantine. Furthermore, this fort is mentioned in the history associated with the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The trail to Kalwantine Fort usually begins from the village of Thakurwadi. From Mumbai, one can reach Panvel by train, and then take a bus or local transport to Thakurwadi to start the trek. If you are undertaking this trip for the first time, it is recommended to go with an experienced guide or a group of trekking enthusiasts. Some tour agencies offer camping and other amenities along with the trek itself.
During the monsoon season, the trek to Kalwantine Fort can be dangerous because the rains make the rocky steps and trails very slippery. Therefore, the best time for trekking is considered to be from October to March.
This hike is not ordinary. If you have a fear of heights, health problems, or if the weather is unfavorable, it is better to forgo the hike. When visiting the trail, be sure to bring shoes with good tread, sufficient water, and necessary safety supplies.
