Celebrating half a century as a manufacturer in Brazil, Fiat has a vast history built through its passenger vehicles. However, despite being widely recognized as a car producer, the Italian brand also ventured into truck manufacturing in the country, although this path was not as successful as that of its cars.
As with any long history, the beginning of this initiative was not simple, given that it continued the former National Motor Factory, informally known as the legendary 'Fenemê'. The history of the FNM began on June 13, 1942, during World War II, with the purpose of manufacturing aeronautical engines in Duque de Caxias (RJ).
After the end of the conflict in 1945, the company began producing heavy trucks in 1949, becoming the first Brazilian automotive industry. The first significant milestone for FNM in the automotive sector came through a collaboration with the Italian Isotta Fraschini, resulting in the launch of the FNM D-7300 in 1949. This vehicle, based on the Isotta Fraschini D.80, was the first truck produced in series in Brazil, equipped with a 7.3-liter, 100 hp diesel engine and an 8-ton load capacity.
Subsequently, the situation complicated with the bankruptcy of Isotta Fraschini. At that time, FNM formed a partnership with the then-state-owned Italian Alfa Romeo, initiating the era of the notorious 'Fenemê' trucks. The first model of this phase was the FNM D-9500, launched in 1952, which had a 130 hp diesel engine and a capacity for 8.1 tons of cargo, capable of reaching 14 tons when coupled with a trailer. Starting in 1953, FNM implemented a plan for nationalizing components, covering cabins, tires, and batteries, aiming to achieve 45% local content.
The FNM's phase as a state-owned company ended in 1968 when it was privatized and incorporated by Alfa Romeo. In 1973, Fiat took control of Alfa Romeo and, consequently, FNM. Four years before discontinuing the FNM brand, in 1973, Fiat had concrete plans to expand its operations in Brazil. While building its factory unit in Betim (MG), the company acquired 43% of Alfa Romeo do Brasil (which controlled FNM at the time), with the goal of using the Duque de Caxias factory to develop a new line of trucks.
Three years later, in 1976, the Fiat 130 was introduced, a medium model equipped with a six-cylinder engine and a modern cabin ('cara chata'), representing a considerable advance over the old FNM models from the 1960s. During the same period, the heavy FNM 190 began to absorb the influence of the Italian group. Still in 1976, Fiat assumed full command of operations and extinguished the FNM brand. In 1977, Fiat Diesel Brasil S.A. was born, at which point the brand began to display only the Fiat name in its heavy vehicle portfolio.
With the new corporate name, the automaker updated its line: the 70 and 130 models were replaced by the new Fiat 80, 120, and 140. The heavy 190 received a renewed version, called the 190H, which offered a more comfortable and updated monocoque cabin. Additionally, the brand began supplying chassis for urban buses and options with a factory third axle, increasing load capacity.
Fiat soon faced logistical and operational difficulties common to many automakers operating in a continental-sized country. The problems were clear: even facing these obstacles, Fiat continued to modernize its line. In 1982, it launched the Fiat 190 Turbo, equipped with a 306 hp turbo engine, bringing the model up to the technological level of competitors of the time, such as Mercedes-Benz, Scania, and Volvo. In addition to the new engine, Fiat invested in unprecedented comfort features for the category at that time.
However, innovation was not enough to reverse the situation. In addition to the low acceptance of Fiat trucks in the market, recurring strikes and confrontations on the production line caused layoffs and demonstrations. Unexpectedly, in June 1985, Fiat permanently ceased truck production. Some equipment was sold to other manufacturers, and the Xerém factory was bought by Ciferal. In total, Fiat Diesel was active in Brazil for only nine years (from 1976 to 1985), and despite its short existence, its trucks remain in the memory of the roads as robust and unusual models.
Special models from automotive brands are already available in the Brazilian market, following a tradition of celebrating decades-long anniversaries. Fiat, for example, is marking 50 years in Brazil with special editions of the Fastback and Toro models.
This practice of releasing commemorative versions is common in the Brazilian market. While Fiat celebrates its anniversary with special editions, Volkswagen, the German brand, tends to celebrate the age of its own models, and truck manufacturers often adopt this special edition format.

Although the 50-year editions generated criticism, Fiat maintained discretion in previous celebrations. The celebration of 30 years in the country, which occurred in 2006, included an optional package for the ELX versions of the Palio, Siena, and Palio Weekend models. This kit added alloy wheels, mirrors and door handles in the body color, as well as a chrome grille, black cladding on column B, silver interior details, a mirror on the driver's sun visor, exclusive floor mats, front electric windows, height-adjustable steering wheel, fog lights, and power steering.
Additionally, Fiat launched the Celebration kit for the Fire versions of Palio and Siena. This package offered power steering, air conditioning, front electric windows, electric locks, rear headrests, retractable seatbelts in the rear, mirrors with internal manual control, rear window wiper and defroster, and sound system preparation. Due to its popularity, this package remained in the line longer and is highly sought after in the used car market.
In 2025, General Motors celebrated a century of presence in Brazil with three distinct editions. The first was the Chevrolet S10, which received a new color, a specific front bumper, and elevated suspension equipped with Ironman 4x4 springs and shock absorbers. Subsequently, the 100-year Tracker was launched, characterized by light blue paint and based on the top-of-the-line Premier model. Finally, the Onix was presented, using the base of the 1.0 naturally aspirated model but incorporating features from more expensive versions, such as alloy wheels.
Ford pioneered the celebration of 100 years in Brazil in 2019, just two years before ceasing local production. The special editions were applied to the Ka hatch and EcoSport models. Both vehicles featured Belize blue paint, black roof and wheels, and seats with exclusive upholstery displaying a Brazilian flag on the headrest along with the number '100'. A common point was the 1.5 Dragon three-cylinder engine, generating 137 hp, coupled with the six-speed automatic transmission.
At the end of 1993, Ford produced a 75th-anniversary edition in Brazil, using the Escort XR3 convertible as a platform. This car is easily recognizable by its black paint contrasting with the lower body and light gold bumpers. It came standard with all items that were optional on the model, such as a radio with equalizer and electric antenna. Production was limited to only 175 units, one for each dealership, making them highly coveted by collectors today.
Jeep's trajectory in Brazil began in 1954, when Willys established its factory and started manufacturing the CJ. The brand arrived in the country in the 90s with imported models. Domestic production of Jeep cars only began in 2015, with the inauguration of the factory in Goiana, Pernambuco, where the Renegade was introduced. In 2025, the 10-year edition was launched to celebrate this milestone. This version was based on the top-of-the-line Willys version, being the only one with four-wheel drive. The modifications were primarily aesthetic, including new decals and an embroidered logo on the seats. Buyers also received a set of gifts including a bag, shirt, and other accessories.
Volvo began manufacturing trucks in Brazil in November 1979, at the factory located in Curitiba, Paraná. During Fenatran in 2019, the Swedish brand presented the FH 540 40 Years to mark this important date. This special edition had white paint adorned with blue stripes, inspired by the brand's first truck in Brazil, the N10. The production of this special FH was limited to only 40 units.
Scania was among the first companies to establish factories in Brazil, driven by the incentive for national industry promoted by Juscelino Kubitschek. Its unit in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, began operations in 1957 with the L71 model. The 60th-anniversary edition was launched in 2017 for the R440 and R480 models. These trucks came with blue paint and pink stripes, referencing the iconic 113 model from the 90s.
The Fiat 147, originally a European project, managed to adapt to the Brazilian scenario, overcoming current regulations and beginning a fifty-year trajectory for the brand in the country.
The Fiat factory was inaugurated in Betim, Minas Gerais, on July 9, 1976. At the time, the author of the text, an automotive journalist with just over two years of experience, was impressed by the Fiat 147 for being externally compact yet capable of comfortably accommodating four adults, which represented a notable advance in design and engineering.
Technically, the 147 was based on the Italian Fiat 127, launched in Europe at the end of 1971. Although both shared similarities in mechanical concept and design, there were crucial structural differences. Due to the harsher conditions of Brazilian roads compared to European standards, the national model featured a more robust monocoque structure and used an independent rear suspension system with an innovative transverse leaf spring, giving it greater structural resistance than the European version.
Another technical novelty of the 147 was the transverse arrangement of the engine and gearbox at the front. This configuration allowed the mechanics to be concentrated in a reduced space at the front, freeing up more area for occupants and the trunk. Thanks to the installation of the spare tire inside the engine compartment, the trunk achieved a generous capacity of 350 liters, optimizing space utilization. This contrasted with rival VWs, which used air-cooled engines located at the rear, a scheme considered more outdated.
A curious detail about the Fiat 147 was the engine displacement, at 1,050 cm³. Initially, the project aimed for a 1,000 cm³ engine, like the Italian model. However, old tax laws in Brazil imposed higher manufacturing taxes on vehicles with engines up to 999 cm³ than those with engines between 1,000 and 1,300 cm³. This absurd situation, resulting from legislation created in Congress in the late 50s by Volkswagen to benefit the Fusca 1200 over competitors DKW 1000 and Renault Dauphine/Gordini 850, forced the Italians to increase the engine displacement so that the car would fall into the lower IPI bracket. The goal was to make the Fiat 147 more competitive in the Brazilian market. This legislative flaw was only corrected during the Collor government, in the early 90s, when fiscal incentives were introduced for cars with engines smaller than 1,000 cm³.
In 1976, the author recalls seeing the first Fiat 147s in tests in the magazines Quatro Rodas and Oficina, both from Editora Abril. He noticed the very small diameter of the exhaust pipe, which seemed insufficient for a 47 hp engine. Initially, the pipe was small, but the cars distributed to dealerships soon started coming with a larger diameter, which conveyed a perception of power more suitable for marketing, although Italian engineering knew that the smaller pipe would be sufficient for the 47 hp generated by the 1,050 cm³ engine.
Fortunately, this issue was resolved in time, and the first owners were satisfied, despite recurring problems with the gearbox. The Fiat 147, being Fiat's first national car, caused a great impact on the market due to its new technologies, low gasoline consumption, ample interior space, and surprising trunk for the time. The author conducted a comparative test between a 1976 147 (chassis no. 00001) and one of the last produced in December 1986. During these ten years of production, the vehicle evolved significantly, especially in the gearbox, whose engagement quality improved considerably. The Fiat 147 unquestionably consolidated the Brazilian automotive industry and served as the starting point for half a century of success for the Italian brand in Brazil.
