During the rainy season and high humidity, preserving dry spices and food in the kitchen becomes a serious challenge. Especially sugar, which quickly absorbs moisture from the air, causing it to clump in the container, turning into a hard lump or stone. Using damp sugar not only creates inconvenience but also increases the risk of pests or ants.
If you encounter the problem of clumped or moist sugar in a jar, you do not need to throw it away or dry it for hours in the sun. With the help of a few simple items found in the kitchen, you can keep the sugar dry, loose, and fresh for many months.
How to keep sugar fresh:
One of the most effective methods for absorbing moisture is using uncooked rice. You need to take one teaspoon of uncooked rice, wrap it in a small cotton bag, and place it either at the bottom or the top of the sugar container. The rice will absorb all the moisture from the jar, and the sugar will remain completely dry.
Using cloves also helps. Adding 4-5 whole cloves to the sugar jar not only prevents moisture from the air from reaching the sugar but also repels ants due to its strong aroma.
If the sugar becomes too moist or clumps form, you can place one dry slice of bread in the jar and tightly close the lid. After five to six hours, the bread will completely absorb the moisture from the sugar, and it will become loose again.
To prevent moisture from the bottom, it is recommended to lay a paper towel or absorbent paper at the bottom of the jar before filling it with sugar. This will prevent moisture rising from below from reaching the sugar.
Furthermore, instead of regular plastic containers, you should always store sugar in a glass or heavy airtight jar. It is important never to use wet spoons and to immediately close the lid tightly after use.
Another way to combat moisture is to add 5-6 dry kidney beans or raisins to the jar; this also helps prevent moisture accumulation inside the sugar.
