This week, Alibaba introduced two artificial intelligence updates, deliberately segmenting consumer and enterprise audiences. On August 7th, the Qwen application received five new features: research analysis, scheduled tasks, workspace assistant, agent area, and voice calls. On August 6th, Alibaba Cloud opened public testing for Wan 3.0, the third generation of the Tongyi video model. Access to it is available through Alibaba Cloud Bailian, the Wanxiang portal, and the Qwen PC client.
The changes in the Qwen application represent a more significant event for consumers. The new workspace assistant can break down set goals, utilize tools, and deliver results on both mobile and PC, giving the application characteristics of a light agent rather than just a chatbot. Providing free access is a targeted market capture strategy: Alibaba initially aims for scale and dominance as an entry point, leaving paid quotas for professional workspace users for later.

API prices are set at 0.3 yuan per second at 480p resolution, 0.6 yuan at 720p, and 1.2 yuan at 1080p, which is a deliberate attempt to attract small and medium-sized business budgets rather than compete with premium studios.
The company's joint bet is structural. Since the capabilities of the models converge, the next competitive advantage becomes the speed at which raw capabilities are packaged and implemented into daily use. Alibaba's strategy combines free entry for consumers with a pay-as-you-go system for enterprises, allowing consumer revenue to ultimately subsidize the corporate segment. The Qwen application manages the funnel, while Wan 3.0 and the Bailian API handle billing.
The success of this strategy depends on three factors: how quickly Wan 3.0 exits beta testing, whether the Qwen workspace assistant retains professional users after the initial 13 free requests, and whether Doubao from ByteDance and WorkBuddy from Tencent can achieve similar document-to-video processing capabilities before the Wan 3.0 API stabilizes. Currently, Alibaba is the first Chinese hyperscaler to release a video model with document input support at SMB pricing, but this window of opportunity will not remain open long.

The model demonstrated a breakthrough in autonomous programming, independently operating for about 16 days in an empty folder to create a self-evolving agent framework named oh-my-cli, which was fully open-sourced on GitHub. In performing professional office tasks, Qwen3.8 completed the annotation of legal clauses in one hour, a task that would take a team of lawyers a week. Furthermore, the model analyzed over 160 hours of basketball game footage, containing more than 8400 offensive and defensive episodes, and prepared player tactical profiles and reports for coaches in just a few minutes. The ability to handle long context allows the model to read 200-page financial PDFs and process over 100 hours of video for subsequent use in workflows.
On the external Arena ranking, Qwen models rank just behind Anthropic Claude overall and hold fourth place in the global CodeArena programming ranking. The pricing policy is aggressive: domestically, the cost is 12 yuan per million input tokens and 36 yuan per million output tokens, with internal cache hits valued at 1.5 yuan. International rates are $2 USD and $6 USD per million tokens, corresponding to 40% and 24% of the Opus price.
The company's strategy is based on a principle of pricing in exchange for scale, locking developers and corporate clients into the Qianwen ecosystem through the high economic efficiency of the flagship model. Qianwen Office is the first platform to realize the capabilities of Qwen3.8. Although closely tied to Qwen3.8, it is open to using any model better suited for a specific task, including models not developed by Alibaba. This creates internal pressure on the Qwen team to maintain leadership in office applications.
Qianwen Office is the result of several months of internal integration and reorganization, during which QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun were merged under the leadership of DingTalk CEO Chen Yusen. Alibaba utilizes its existing base of DingTalk enterprises and Alibaba Cloud instead of directly competing with Tencent in consumer AI tools. The Amap application leads in the transport category, offering HarmonyOS-specific live windows for walking and cycling navigation displayed on the lock screen and status bar. It also includes real-world AR navigation for foldable devices and proactive trip alerts via the trainable intelligent agent XIAOYI. The Fliggy Travel application allows users to search for destinations by voice using an intent framework, requiring minimal steps. In e-commerce, the Damai AI Maibao agent enables purchasing movie tickets with a single voice command through XIAOYI, while the 1688 agent processes corporate information requests. Xianyu achieves recommendation response times in milliseconds thanks to the intent framework. Taobao and Dian Tao adapt immersive browsing for tablets and foldable screens with adjustable display columns, while Taobao Deals ensures seamless content transfer between devices.
Content applications deeply leverage HarmonyOS capabilities. Quark and UC Browser utilize the smart card function to exchange content segments in card format, accessible to other users via QR code scanning. Qianwen uses a unified drag-and-drop function, allowing users to move images or text from any application interface directly into Qianwen for cross-application AI analysis, eliminating the need for traditional copy-pasting. The integration of the Qwen agent demonstrates the concept of AI as a system capability rather than just an isolated application feature.
Office productivity in DingTalk is achieved through deep system integration via the intent framework, service cards, wireless projection, and screen casting. Fengniao Rider and Fengniao Courier, the most frequently used courier applications, simultaneously integrate six system capabilities: scanning, smart image selection, TaskPool, HarmonyOS vibration, security camera, and secure location, as well as AI reading.
