Angola's inflation falls below 10% for the first time since 2015

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), annual inflation in Angola reached 9.33% in July, marking the first time the indicator has dropped below double digits since the start of the Consumer Price Index series in the country in 2015.

The INE press release notes that the July level reflects a slowdown of 0.78 percentage points compared to the previous month and a decrease of 10.15 percentage points relative to the same period last year, maintaining an overall downward trend.

Despite the general decline, six provinces continue to record double-digit inflation. Among them are Cabinda, which recorded the highest prices in the country (13.09%), as well as Malanje (12.01%) and Lunda Sul (11.40%).

Conversely, the province of Cuanza Norte demonstrated the lowest inflation (6.00%), followed by Uambo (6.59%) and Cunene (6.86%).

By expenditure categories, education showed the largest price increase, with an annual variation of 25.24%. This is followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (10.4%), housing, water, electricity, and fuel (10.17%), and healthcare (10.16%).

The smallest price increase was noted in the transport sector (3.65%), leisure, entertainment, and culture (4.73%), as well as in hotels, cafes, and restaurants (5.40%).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the change in prices for a basket of goods and services across the country, began systematic compilation in January 2015 and covers 18 provinces. This index is rooted in the Consumer Price Index launched in 1991, which was initially limited to Luanda, according to INE methodological notes. The CPI data collection system ensures the representativeness of sales points across the territory based on a sample of 1,193 trade establishments and markets.
