China has launched the first floating wind energy platform, whose height corresponds to that of a 110-story skyscraper. This installation has already begun supplying electricity to an oil field located in the South China Sea and is designed to withstand super typhoons with wind gusts up to 220 kilometers per hour.
The platform, named Haiyou Anlan, has a capacity of 16 megawatts and is located approximately 136 kilometers from the coastline in the northern part of the South China Sea. The structure is installed on a tension-leg platform, which has allowed for reduced steel consumption and a smaller footprint in the water area while maintaining the required strength.
The total mass of this structure reaches 7.8 thousand tons, and the area covered by the turbine blades is equivalent to seven and a half standard football fields. Energy from the station is transported to the Lufeng oil field via subsea cables. According to calculations by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the annual generation of this station will reach approximately 54 million kilowatt-hours.
CNOOC views the commissioning of the facility as a significant step in advancing deep-water wind energy in China. The corporation forecasts that this platform will provide annual fuel savings of about 15 thousand cubic meters and lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 35 thousand tons.
