Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy Alexander Abramham met with a delegation led by the UK High Commissioner in South Africa. The discussion focused on cooperation and UK support within the framework of South Africa's just energy transition.
Abramham emphasized that the meeting confirmed the United Kingdom's long-standing commitment to supporting South Africa's just energy transition. He added that UK technical and financial assistance contributes to advancing this transition by protecting jobs, enhancing energy security, expanding access, and lowering electricity prices while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Abramham stated that the South African government continues to strive to strengthen its alliance with the UK to facilitate an energy transition that is both just and economically inclusive. He noted that the success of this process will depend on continuous engagement with South Africa's businesses, workforce, and communities to ensure the transition creates jobs, expands opportunities, and delivers tangible benefits locally.
Furthermore, Abramham noted that the effective completion of the Eskom separation will clearly demonstrate South Africa's determination to transform its energy sector, enhance competition, and create opportunities for significant investment and innovation.
As the second-largest international participant in South Africa's just energy transition project, the UK has pledged over $1.875 billion. These funds are primarily channeled through guarantees and commercial financing, as well as grants for technical assistance, institutional strengthening, and capacity building. This support critically focuses on local government level projects to ensure municipalities have the necessary technical knowledge to implement, build, and maintain local energy infrastructure.
The UK supports 70 registered just energy transition partnership projects in South Africa totaling $391 million (R6.92 billion), which is the highest number among International Partner Group members. Since the focus is on project implementation rather than portfolio development, 29 of these projects are currently underway, and 41 have been completed.

The future power plant will be equipped with 35 natural gas turbines capable of generating up to 7.65 gigawatts of energy, which will be directed to the planned Amazon data center.
Licenses allow this facility to emit about 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. This permitted volume is more than double the annual emissions of the James H. Miller Jr. coal plant in Alabama, which emits approximately 16 million tons.
However, this does not mean the plant will necessarily reach this limit, as such facilities typically do not operate at the maximum capacity allowed by licenses.
AI data centers consume vast amounts of electricity to perform the trillions of calculations necessary for creating and running these systems. As AI expansion puts a strain on electrical grids, companies are seeking alternatives to avoid long waits for grid connections from suppliers.
One such solution is building their own power plants directly on the data center premises. Natural gas is being considered as a relatively fast and simple option to implement.
Expert Michael Thomas, founder of Cleanview, told The New York Times about the rise of off-grid gas plant projects in Texas and other regions.
Amazon's emissions have increased in recent years, and the company itself has acknowledged that the growth of AI data centers could complicate its environmental goals. Margaret Callahan, an Amazon representative, noted that the current situation differs from when the company helped create the Climate Pledge, but confirmed its commitment.
The company is also exploring the use of solar energy and batteries in the data center and stated that the project will create thousands of jobs.
Environmental groups are concerned about the potential impact of the project on the climate and air quality. In addition to carbon dioxide, gas power plants release pollutants that contribute to smog formation and may be linked to issues such as asthma and heart disease.
This case demonstrates the scale of the energy challenge posed by the AI race: how to expand the necessary infrastructure for these systems without proportionally increasing the environmental impact.
