The Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned on July 25. He submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, concluding his five-year and eighteen-day tenure in the post.
Reasons for Departure and Achievements
Pradhan had to step down amid controversies related to the NEET-UG 2026 examination and instances of exam material leaks. Nevertheless, despite his resignation, his work in the education sector was significant, as he introduced several substantial changes to the systems of learning, examinations, and talent acquisition.
Development of Digital Education
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a serious challenge arose regarding providing online education to millions of students. During Pradhan's tenure, digital platforms, e-content, virtual laboratories, and technology-based learning were actively promoted, which contributed to expanding resources for quality student education.
Changes in Assessment and Policy
Under the new education policy, the development of new textbooks and assessment systems based on the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) began to reduce tension surrounding board exams. The volume of questions in CBSE and other boards was increased to account for students' potential.
Implementation of the New Education Policy
Although the New Education Policy was adopted before Pradhan became the Minister of Education in 2021, he accelerated its practical implementation in collaboration with various states. Changes such as instruction in the mother tongue in schools, skill education development, a multiple entry-exit system, and the four-year bachelor's degree were implemented.
Reforms in NTA and Legislation
During his period, the National Testing Agency (NTA) became one of the country's largest examination bodies, taking responsibility for conducting major exams such as NEET, JEE, and CUET. Millions of students participated in these tests annually, and the coverage gradually increased.
Furthermore, during his leadership, the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act of 2024 was introduced. Following material leak incidents, the government is working to strengthen this law. Amendments are planned that provide for up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 100 million rupees for organized leaks, as well as the creation of a special fast-track court to hear cases within three months.
Examination Format
After submitting his resignation, Pradhan announced that starting next year, the NEET exam would be conducted in computer mode. He mentioned this in his resignation post on the social media platform X.
