Plans to trade Hardik Pandya are actively being discussed in the market ahead of the IPL 2027 season. In this regard, experienced Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin offered his view on the situation, which sparked new discussions among fans.
Ashwin believes that if Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) intends to acquire Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians (MI) should demand two star Indian players in return, such as Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin noted that Hardik Pandya could move to any franchise, not just Chennai Super Kings (CSK) or KKR. He mentioned various rumors about a potential trade: some suggest CSK might give up Shivam Dube and one fast bowler, while KKR's name has been linked with Cameron Green.
MI will not allow the opponent too big an advantage
Nevertheless, Ashwin stated that if he were making decisions at MI, he would agree to a deal with KKR only under one condition. He emphasized: "If I were at Mumbai Indians, I would only strike a deal with KKR if I received Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return. Only then would Mumbai Indians become stronger than before."
According to Ashwin, Mumbai Indians will assess not only the assets received but also how strong the other team will become after Hardik Pandya's departure. He added that while trading Hardik for Shivam Dube and an Indian fast bowler would strengthen the team, it would not make them invincible. On the other hand, if Hardik joins KKR, their attack and all-round player balance would become extremely dangerous.
Ashwin warned: "If Hardik moves to KKR, their team will look very strong. In that case, Mumbai Indians must consider whether their trade makes the opponent excessively powerful."
Uncertainty surrounding Hardik's future
The IPL 2026 season proved quite disappointing for Mumbai Indians. The five-time champion finished ninth out of ten teams and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Following this, speculation about Hardik Pandya's future increased.
According to available information, both CSK and KKR may be considering bringing in Hardik. However, neither franchise nor the IPL has made an official statement regarding this trade at the moment.
Poor performance in IPL 2026
The previous season was also not bright for Hardik Pandya. In 10 matches, he scored 206 runs and took only four wickets. Since the end of the season, he has stepped away from competitive cricket, and everyone is watching his next moves.
