During the monsoon season, there is an increase in cases of H1N1 (swine flu), and two patient deaths have been registered in the country's capital, Delhi. Due to the rise in incidence, the Delhi Health Department has increased vigilance. Experts emphasize that the number of swine flu cases often increases during this period, so it is crucial for people to know about the causes, symptoms, and prevention methods of this disease.
H1N1 flu, sometimes called swine flu, is one type of influenza A virus. In the 2009-2010 season, the H1N1 virus began to spread among humans. It received the name swine flu because it represented a new complex of the influenza virus affecting pigs, birds, and humans.
Professor Dr. Subhash Giri, Director of the Medicine Department at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, provided information on this topic. He stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared H1N1 flu a pandemic in 2009. That year, this virus caused 284,400 deaths worldwide. In August 2010, the WHO announced the end of the pandemic, but the H1N1 strain that caused the epidemic became one of the strains causing seasonal flu. Since then, cases are recorded annually during the monsoon season, although they are not as deadly as before.
Vaccines effective against H1N1 and other seasonal flu viruses have begun to be used to protect against seasonal flu.
If you are generally healthy and develop flu symptoms, most people do not need to see a doctor. However, certain groups of the population face an increased risk of developing serious complications from the flu.
If you experience the following symptoms, you must go to the hospital immediately. An H1N1 flu test will be conducted there, and treatment will be prescribed according to the infection test results.
Influenza viruses, such as H1N1, infect the inner linings of the nose, throat, and lungs. This virus is transmitted through the cough or sneeze of an infected person. When someone inhales air containing contaminated droplets after another person sneezes, the virus enters the body. Infection can also occur through contact with a contaminated surface, after which the person touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.
To prevent swine flu, it is recommended to wash hands before eating. If flu symptoms appear, a mask should be worn. It is also important to get vaccinated against the flu upon a doctor's recommendation and avoid contact with infected individuals.
