During this meeting, Meta's algorithms and technical systems were discussed. According to sources, the company acknowledged certain shortcomings in its algorithmic system.
This meeting took place after the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's video from Facebook due to an automated moderation glitch. Meta's global team, led by Global Affairs Director Joel Kaplan, negotiated with the government. The company called the removal an operational error, offered official apologies, and stated that the video was quickly restored.
According to sources, the central topic of the recent negotiations was Meta's algorithms and related technical mechanisms. Previously, the minister had demanded that Meta identify all issues and present an action plan for their correction. Furthermore, the company presented a draft of new internal security measures and separate processing protocols for accounts of prominent public figures.
The government expressed serious dissatisfaction with automated errors affecting high-level verified accounts. MEITY emphasized that all platforms are obligated to fully comply with Indian law and take immediate corrective measures. A warning was also issued that repeated violations and algorithmic deficiencies could affect legal benefits and safe harbor protection under India's IT laws.
It is anticipated that Meta's global team may remain in India for some time longer for further discussions. Additional meetings with the team led by the IT Secretary are expected. Both sides agreed to continue the dialogue until the issues are fully resolved. Currently, the main focus is on rectifying the technical flaws in Meta's systems and implementing necessary improvements in accordance with Indian legislation.
