Textile waste, including discarded t-shirts, manufacturing scraps, and agricultural residues, is accumulating across India. Four Indian startups are developing innovative methods to give these waste materials new value.
NoKasa, founded in Bangalore by engineers Prasad Lingawar and Nachikat Acharya, addresses the growing issue of consumer textile waste. This startup offers a service to pick up old clothes from homes. The clothing is sorted into reusable and unusable categories, ensuring responsible handling. Usable clothing is directed towards reuse, while damaged fabrics undergo recycling or upcycling. Through this model, the company has already helped divert tons of clothing from landfills.
MuddleArt, established in New Delhi in 2019 by Ruby Khan and Sanjeev Kumar Chauhan, brings structure and transparency to textile waste management. The startup collects fabric scraps from sewing factories, classifies them by color and material, and tracks the waste through a digital traceability platform. With over 250 recycling and upcycling partners, MuddleArt has diverted more than 7000 tons of textile waste while creating over 200 green jobs.
In 2023, Mayank Singh and Ayush Saxena launched Tooused, which helps households recycle old clothing, footwear, and even electronics across India. Users send unwanted items from over 18,000 postal codes and receive credits in return, which can be exchanged for cash, charitable donations, or brand vouchers. Usable clothing is donated to non-profit organizations, and the rest is turned into recycled fibers and fabrics. The startup also supports local communities by creating jobs.
Canvaloop, founded in Surat in 2020 by Shreyans Kokre, transforms agricultural waste into textile-quality fibers for the fashion industry. Using banana stems, pineapple leaves, hemp, and other plant residues, the company produces natural fibers using a closed-loop production cycle that requires little water. Canvaloop helps farmers earn income from agricultural waste, reduces dependence on resource-intensive cotton, and produces biodegradable textile fibers.
