Although the premiere of Nitesh Tiwari's film 'Ramayana' is still several months away, the creators are preparing it for release on an unprecedented scale for Indian cinema. The film, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash, is planned to be shown in over 59,000 screens worldwide, marking the largest global premiere for the Indian film industry.
This epic historical film, consisting of two parts, will launch with 'Ramayana: Part 1' during Diwali. The international distribution strategy indicates that the creators are looking far beyond traditional foreign markets for Indian cinema.
According to a report by Sacnilk, Sony Pictures, which is responsible for the film's international distribution, intends to screen 'Ramayana' in over 50,000 screens outside India. An additional approximately 9,000 screens are expected domestically, potentially leading to a total of over 59,000 screenings at opening. However, the creators have not officially confirmed these figures. If the plan is implemented, 'Ramayana' will set a new benchmark for the global distribution of Indian films.
These figures look particularly impressive when compared to recent major Indian projects. Allu Arjun's film 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' was released in approximately 12,000–13,000 screens globally, while SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' was shown in 10,000–11,000 screens. Most major Indian films are shown in significantly fewer global screenings, so reaching a level near 59,000 screens elevates 'Ramayana' to a completely different level. Due to this scale, it is being compared to Hollywood blockbusters, such as James Cameron's film 'Avatar: The Way of Water', which was shown in approximately 52,000 screens worldwide.
Producer Namit Malhotra previously stated that the project's goal is to present 'Ramayana' not just to the Indian audience, but as a global theatrical experience. It is anticipated that the film will be released in about 50 languages and available in premium formats, including IMAX. The 'Brahma AI' technology from DNEG (a visual effects company) is used to synchronize actors' lip movements in dubbed versions. This is done to avoid relying solely on traditional dubbing, instead aligning the actors' lip movements with dialogues in different languages. This methodology was demonstrated to the public when the English trailer was released after the Hindi version premiered.
In this two-part picture directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, and Yash plays Ravana. Sani Deol portrays Hanuman. Ravi Dubey, Kajal Aggarwal, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil, Rakul Preet Singh, Shiba Chadha, and Adinat Kotare also participate in the project. The project is produced by Namit Malhotra through 'Prime Focus Studios' in collaboration with DNEG and Yash's 'Monster Mind Creations'. According to available data, the total production cost of both films is around 4,000 crore rupees. The music for the film was created with the participation of Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, and action sequences were overseen by 'Mad Max' action specialist Guy Norris. 'Ramayana: Part 1', shot for IMAX, will be released in theaters on November 6, 2026, for the celebration of Diwali, with the second part scheduled for Diwali 2027.
