In April, a black stork fell from the sky near India Gate. During a normal day, a call was received at the Wildlife SOS duty station. When the team arrived, they found the bird lying motionless on the ground. Although its wings were intact and feathers undamaged, the bird's body was nearly giving up. There were no visible injuries explaining the collapse.
Rescuers acted promptly: they moved the bird into the shade, administered fluids, and closely monitored its condition. Within a few hours, the stork regained enough strength to spread its wings and fly away again.
Before this rescue operation concluded, another call came from Chattarpur. There, a juvenile black stork was found having fallen. By the time the rescuers arrived, the symptoms were almost identical: dehydration, heat stress, and complete exhaustion.
Soon after, a parakeet with a ringed neck was found in a Delhi residential area, unable to take flight. In Uttar Pradesh state, a juvenile flamingo was discovered in a state of distress after prolonged exposure to extreme heat. This list of affected birds continued to grow in the following weeks.
Pigeons that could not move were lifted from railway stations. Indian peacocks roamed residential areas. Mavis and owls appeared inside office buildings, embassies, and institutional campuses—either too weak or disoriented to find an exit. Many birds penetrated man-made structures in search of shade, water, or relief, as if the city buildings had become their last refuge from the heat. Experts argue that this change in behavior indicates a larger problem that rising temperatures are creating for wildlife in Indian cities.
For years, rescue teams across North India prepared for May and June as the toughest months of summer. This is usually when peak temperatures are reached, and numerous calls about the plight of wild animals come in. However, this year, the usual calendar no longer applied. The crisis began in April.
Data obtained from the Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Unit shows that in April 2026 alone, the organization registered an almost 40 percent increase in wildlife rescue operations in the Delhi-NCR region compared to the same month in 2025. This marked the highest figure for rescues in April in the organization's history.
The number of bird rescues increased even more sharply, rising by almost 49 percent. Rescues involving mammals and reptiles collectively grew by almost 24 percent. This trend continued into May. The number of bird rescues in Delhi and Agra remained high. Cumulatively, April and May 2026 demonstrated an almost 21 percent increase in bird rescues compared to the same period in 2025.
Vasim Akram, Director of Sustainability and Special Projects at Wildlife SOS, noted in an interview with The Better India:
The design team provided a description of the Casa Paquetá plot, which is bordered by four neighboring lots and has no direct visibility to the public road. Given this situation, the project's focus was to expand the scope of the residence, ensuring a high standard of quality and environmental well-being in all areas of the house.
