The first ODI match between Ireland and Afghanistan, scheduled to take place in Bridie (UK), was cancelled due to incessant rain, and not a single ball was bowled. The cancellation of this game completely dashed Ireland's last hopes for automatic qualification into the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2027.
Ireland currently ranks 12th in the ICC ODI global rankings. The team faced an extremely difficult mathematical challenge to secure a direct qualification spot: they needed to win five matches in the ODI series against Afghanistan with a scoreline of 5-0.
Furthermore, realizing this scenario required both remaining ODI matches between India and the West Indies to end in a loss for the West Indies. Only then could Ireland overtake Afghanistan, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe in the rankings and secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup.
However, following the cancellation of the first match due to bad weather, this possibility has become entirely unfeasible. Ireland will now have to go through the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup qualification tournaments to reach the 2027 championship.
According to the established ICC qualification system, a Cricket World Cup tournament involving 10 teams will be held. The winner of this tournament will automatically qualify for the 12-team ODI World Cup 2027. Teams finishing second, third, and fourth will enter the World Cup Super Series, where they will compete for the final ticket to the main tournament.
The cricket qualification tournament will include the two least represented teams among full ICC members, excluding South Africa and Zimbabwe (who are acting as hosts). In addition to them, four top teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League-2, as well as four teams that advanced through the World Cup qualification playoffs, will participate. The World Cup qualification playoffs will feature the four lowest-ranked teams from League-2 and four teams from the Challenge League. The top four teams from this playoff will advance to the main World Cup qualification tournament.
Only 12 teams participate in the ICC Challenge League, divided into two groups of six teams each. Both groups will conduct a round-robin tournament consisting of three matches. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the qualification playoffs.
Ireland aims to avoid repeating the disappointment experienced before the 2023 ODI World Cup. At that time, the team failed to advance past the Super Six round in the World Cup qualifiers and could not secure a spot in the main tournament. Now, it faces the task again of reaching the 2027 World Cup through a difficult qualification path.
