Samsung disclosed the details of the launch of its new line of foldable smartphones in Brazil this Thursday (6), and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 presents several significant changes compared to its predecessor.
One of the most evident distinctions lies in the design: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it resemble a passport more than a traditional phone. This change contributes to the device being more compact and offering greater comfort during use, especially when open.
Structurally, Samsung incorporated reinforced aluminum construction to enhance the device's durability, complemented by the use of titanium in the internal hinge mechanism. Furthermore, the outer screen now features Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 protective glass, providing greater resistance against scratches and drops.
The modifications to the Galaxy Fold 8's design also impacted its dimensions and weight; it weighs approximately 201 grams and has a thinner profile when opened compared to the previous model.
When opening the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the internal display is slightly smaller than that of the Z Fold 7. While the previous version had an 8-inch screen, the new model features 7.6 inches. Similarly, the outer screen decreased from 6.5 inches on the Z Fold 7 to 5.5 inches on the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
However, both displays on the new device feature higher brightness, reaching up to 3,200 nits (compared to the maximum of 2,600 nits on the Z Fold 7), facilitating content viewing under intense sunlight.
As expected, the Z Fold 8 was equipped with a more advanced and powerful processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, ensuring robust performance to run heavy applications or demanding games for several years. It maintains the same basic 12 GB RAM configuration as the previous model but gains a natural speed increase due to the newer processor.
There was also a noticeable improvement in the battery. Although the change may seem modest (the Z Fold 7 has 4,400 mAh, while the Z Fold 8 has 4,800 mAh), practical tests indicate an advancement in autonomy, resulting from the combination of a higher capacity cell with a more energy-efficient processor.
In terms of camera, the situation reverses. To achieve the reduced weight and new format of the Z Fold 8, Samsung opted for a 50-megapixel main camera. If the focus is on the set with the highest numerical resolution, the Z Fold 7 has the advantage, featuring a 200-megapixel main camera. The difference in image quality in practical tests remains uncertain.
Both phones are equipped with smart features, such as instant text translation, note summarization, and AI photo editing. The distinction is that the Z Fold 8 comes from the factory with a more updated software version, specifically optimized to better utilize the new wider screen format during work tasks or browsing.
