Woman with five children allegedly murdered by boyfriend in Khayelitsha, South Africa

Police in Lingelethu West registered a murder case after discovering the body of an adult female at a dumping site in F section, Lingelethu West. The woman, who was reportedly a mother of five, was allegedly subjected to brutal stabbing by her new boyfriend and subsequently dumped at the site, coinciding with Women's Month observance in South Africa.

The community became agitated on Monday when individuals passing by on their commute discovered the deceased woman's lifeless body in F Section, Lingelethu West, at approximately 8 am. A male suspect, believed to be the victim's boyfriend, was apprehended and made his initial court appearance at the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, facing charges of murder. His next court date is scheduled for August 12th.

Constable Ndakhe Gwala, a spokesperson for the Provincial police, confirmed that the Lingelethu West police logged the murder case following the discovery of the adult female's body at the dumping site in F section Lingelethu West on Monday, August 3, 2026, around 8 am. He also stated that a male suspect was arrested and appeared before the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

A local resident acquainted with the deceased described the scene as horrific. This resident noted that the woman had five children, and the perpetrator was not the children's father but rather a new boyfriend whom she had known for less than six months. The resident expressed uncertainty about the exact method of killing but emphasized the gruesome state of the body, stating that her intestines were exposed upon discovery in F Section. Furthermore, the resident suggested that the suspect might be a murderer who fled from another crime in the Eastern Cape, as he was a tenant and not from the local area.

The resident added that the deceased's youngest child has a mental disability and will now be cared for by her elderly grandparents. Describing the victim as a quiet person who was never insulted, the resident noted the profound shock felt by the community. During the incident, there was a power outage (loadshedding) and mist in the early morning hours, which allowed people traveling to work to walk past the body.

Siya Monakali, who serves as the spokesperson and advocacy coordinator for Ilitha Labantu, an organization based in Cape Town that focuses on gender-based violence (GBV), women's and children's rights, and community support, commented that this event serves as a distressing reminder of the ongoing issue of intimate partner violence. Monakali stressed that violence against women must not be confined to commemorative periods like Women's Month, asserting that protecting women requires consistent effort, organized action, and substantial investment throughout the entire year.

He further elaborated that addressing intimate partner violence demands more than just a criminal justice reaction after a woman's death; it necessitates stronger preventative programs, readily available psychosocial support services, efficient referral systems, increased community awareness, and coordinated cooperation among government bodies, civil society, law enforcement, and local communities. Equally vital, according to Monakali, is guaranteeing that survivors can seek assistance without encountering fear, stigma, or obstacles.
