Cases of 22 children dying from the Chandipura virus have been registered in the state of Gujarat. The incidence of this virus increases during the rainy season. Questions have arisen regarding the causes of high mortality, the possibility of the virus spreading to other states, and preventive measures.
The virus is named after the city of Chandipura, located in the state of Maharashtra. The first detection of this virus occurred in 1965. It is a viral infection whose symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, body and muscle aches, vomiting, and seizures after infection.
Medical Superintendent of Lady Hardinge Medical College, Dr. L.H. Ghotekar, explained that the Chandipura virus does not always cause a severe course of the illness. However, it can become dangerous if the symptoms are not recognized in a timely manner. Without control over the infection, the disease gradually progresses, starting with a severe cough followed by difficulty breathing.
Dr. Ghotekar notes that in severe cases, the virus can lead to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and encephalitis (brain inflammation). If the virus affects the brain and is not controlled, it can lead to death.
According to Dr. Ghotekar, the Chandipura virus is zoonotic, meaning it lives in animals and can be transmitted to humans. Human infection can occur through contact with sandflies, ticks, and mosquitoes. Cases of the disease are more frequently recorded during the rainy period, and the highest number of cases is observed among children under 14 years old.
Dr. Ghotekar warns that there is a risk of new cases of the virus appearing in areas inhabited by carrier insects. Therefore, it is extremely important to take preventive measures in other states as well.
To prevent infection with the Chandipura virus, it is recommended to maintain hygiene: regularly wash hands using soap and water. It is also necessary to avoid contact with wild animals and their habitats. Given the potential role of insects in the spread of the virus, insect repellents and mosquito nets should be used for protection.
