Without forgetting the disappointment of 2023, Temba Bavuma expressed his determination to win the World Cup on his own ground. Although it is still far from the start of this tournament, his goal is set on the ODI World Cup in 2027.
Bavuma stated that this tournament, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, is his biggest dream in his career. During the World Cup venue unveiling event, speaking with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Bavuma noted that he will turn 37 by the time the tournament starts.
He emphasized that achieving this goal will require constant work not only on physical fitness but also on mental resilience. Bavuma said: 'By 2027, I will be 37 years old. So it's not enough just to be physically fit; you need to be mentally prepared too. There is a lot to do before I reach that point. It's a dream, but right now my full focus is on getting better every day and taking small steps forward.'
The 2023 Dream Was Shattered
The 2023 ODI World Cup remains an unfinished story for Temba Bavuma and South Africa. In the tournament held in India, the Proteas team showed excellent form and reached the semi-finals, but Australia denied them a chance to play in the final. Now, looking ahead to the upcoming 2027 tournament on home soil, Bavuma strives to change history. South Africa has yet to reach the ODI World Cup final, and the host team intends to end this wait for the first time.
Temba Bavuma noted: 'The World Cup is held every four years, and it is the biggest challenge. You have to play your best cricket continuously for about six to eight weeks. I felt that pressure and atmosphere in 2023. Now I want to learn from that experience.'
Bavuma believes that the 2027 World Cup will be not only a sporting event but also a wonderful opportunity to present the African continent's identity to the world. He added: 'We have a chance to show the world a face of Africa that people may never have seen so closely before. Our culture, our hospitality, and our beauty will reach the whole world through this Cup.'
The path to the 2027 World Cup will not be easy for Temba Bavuma. Age, continuous playing, and the pressure of captaincy will be serious challenges for him. Nevertheless, he believes that by maintaining good physical condition and strong spirit, South Africa can fulfill the dream of becoming world champions for the first time.
